Review of Magwa Falls

After driving from Durban to Port St Johns many times years ago, and never going down the Lusikisiki road due to its condition, I heard it had been paved and I had to go. The falls is little bit of the main road, but is on a interesting road in. Beautiful, I was aware of issues with locals before, but as more folks go there and real industry comes, it will get better. A must if you are driving that way.

In December of 2015 I went to Magwa Falls with family. When we arrived two local children came to see us. One 'became' our guide and the other 'looked after our car'. We went to the top of the falls which was a sight to be hold.

On our return to the car it was surrounded by about 30 local / rural children ages 5 - 15. They demanded money and went into a frenzy, mobbing the car. Hands bashing the windows, children jumping on the bonnet. One teenager demanded, "You WILL give me money!".

We did manage to get away without any damage.
If you go to this place do not accept help from anyone! Obviously in Africa and especially in the Eastern Cape handing out money to the poor communities is a bad idea.

These falls were magnificent and definitely worth the trip while in Lusikisiki. Be sure and take the hike up to the the other side. Beautiful!!!!

It's a shame that (as far as I know) these Falls aren't viewable from the opposite side. Water was very low during our visit but we could imagine how impressive they could be during wetter periods. You do have to watch your footing - no guard rails here. Ideally use a GPS to find the Falls - signposting is a bit hit & miss. The drive from the 'main' road was lovely through a long avenue of trees bordering tea plantations.

These falls are gorgeous, well worth the visit. It's a little bit of a hike to get to them but nothing strenuous and can easily be done by kids.
