We were greatly pleased with this gem of a place. Our unit was clean and comfortable. Just outside GNP with easy access. We fell in love with Doug and his friendly, knowledgeable staff. They told us of "Polebridge" bakery - Yum! - located in the middle of nowhere - and from there to beautiful Lake Bowman where we kayaked. They gave us a worth of information on where to visit and where to eat. We felt like we were staying with good friends - they made our visit the success it was, and we would definitely go back!

We spent 3 nights here in March to do a little skiing. Most places in the area were closed. We got a basic motel-sized room at an appropriate price. Some of the summer amenities (hot tub, barbecue) weren't available that time of year, but that's reflective of the price and low occupancy of the entire area. Here's the important thing for me--the room was clean, as quiet as can be expected anywhere in the area (with a highway and rail lines running through the canyon) and the bed was clean and in good shape. I'm amazed how many lodges and motels will spend money on everything from hot tubs to decor, and give you a worn-out mattress. Not at this place. We were comfortable and slept well. The owners are helpful and friendly but never intrusive. The Glacier cafe is just down the road, and more fancy fare can be had on winter weekends at the Belton Chalet in West Glacier. When we get some good snow in Glacier, we'll be back.

Room Tip: I'd recommend checking their website http://www.historictamaracklodge.com/ for specials and seas...

We found this detached "family" cabin was perfect for our 3 generations weekend visit to Glacier National Park. We were 2 grandparents, daughter, son-in-law, 1 year old, and 4 yr. old. We had a 2 bedroom cabin w/ a futon in small living room. The small kitchen was amazingly well stocked. We cooked all our meals. there were knives, pots and pans, dishes, and coffee was provided. there were only 5 stools around counter which was fine for us (our 6th person was in a high chair), but it might be a problem for a family of 6. there is a table and 4 chairs on the small front porch, but it was too cold to eat out in October. the place was very clean, and appeared to be well cared for. Doug at the front desk was very helpful. You can walk around the grounds. It is quite close to the West Glacier entrance.

Room Tip: ask for one of the family cabins up on the hill behind the main lodge

We stayed in the summit cabin for a week. Very nice, very clean. Doug and staff made us feel like members of the family and we like it there so much I found a job in Kalispell and we're moving there. Doug is kind of enough to rent me the cabin again until we sell our house in Florida and my wife can join me in Montana!

....what (almost everybody) says about Tamarack Lodge! Having had to cancel a trip to Canada & Montana last year owing to illness, wife & I were happy to find, when we finally showed up 11 months later for a 2-night stay, that Doug, the owner, had checked and found that he had managed to re-rent the cabin we had booked previously and so credited us with last year's payment. I know this is honest dealing, but not all owners or managers would have done this and we appreciated the consideration.

In fact, it would be difficult to find anything to criticise about either the Tamarack Lodge or its friendly, helpful, considerate and enterprising owner. We stayed in the Iceberg cabin, at the end of the group of "Family" cabins up the hill from the Lodge. Well built, completely detached (no neighbour noise!), spacious, well furnished with good quality linens/towels, including comfortable beds and a very fully equipped kitchen, heat-&-cool unit, deck.....
housekeeping service excellent. Doug willing to talk about the Lodge, the Park, the history of the area, everything and anything.... This place is definitely THE place to stay at Hungry Horse, don't miss it.

One suggestion to Doug: privacy of the family cabins is in general assured by the top-quality venetian blinds used at all the windows. Unfortunately the effect is spoiled by the lack of any covering for the clear glass in the door to the deck - similar fitting would be no good because it would rattle, but how about just a curtain which could be draped across at night?

And for future guests: cabins at front do attract more noise from the highway, so the family cabins are best if you can get one.

Room Tip: Family cabins (and probably new cabins opening 2012) are quieter, others may suffer a little from cl...
