Leo was an amazing guide and my wife and I had a blast! We witnessed three wolf packs, many bison, deer, pronghorn, and mountain goats.

We would highly recommend these guided tours to all nature and wild life lovers. This was truly an experience that I will remember for the rest of my life.

Jess and Karyn

Amazing day watching wildlife in the majestic Yellowstone. The guides are extremely knowledgeable and able to share that in a way that really enhances the experience. We saw wolves, bison, elk, pronghorn, bald eagles, a bear and more. Breakfast was set up in the tailgate of an SUV to be enjoyed while we watched in scopes, a hearty lunch was provided after a hike along the river and then more wildlife watching. A bit of downtime before a gourmet dinner followed by a fascinating lecture. A truly memorable day.

Six of us (family members and friends) went on a daylong winter Yellowstone Wolf Tracker tour at the end of January, 2018, and we could not have been more pleased. Everything about this company is first rate. My emails to reserve and pay for the tour were responded to promptly and informatively, as were follow-up queries, including one asking about contingency plans in the event of the threatened government shutdown. Our tour guide, Evan Stout, was absolutely superb -- he was not only passionate and knowledgeable about the wildlife but also well versed in the natural history of the park in general and eager to share and to answer our questions. As a retired biologist, I was favorably impressed with his expertise. Evan knew when and where to best look for the animals, especially the often elusive wolves, and we were fortunate to see (and hear howling) members of two packs. He also located coyotes and foxes (making for a "three dog day"), bull elk, bighorn sheep, and mountain goats, and his passion for the bison gave us a new appreciation for these beasts, stoically plowing through the snow. Finding wildlife is a "team sport," and Evan was obviously a well-respected member of the community of other tour guides, wolf watchers, and Park personnel. I was especially awed by Evan's skill and speed in repeatedly setting up a battery of top-notch spotting scopes, adjusting tripods then locating and zooming in on often distant animals to give everyone in the group a close-up view with virtually no waiting around at all. As an added bonus, Evan attached his phone camera to one of the scopes to take pictures that we all shared at the end of day, ones with more detail than I could manage with my mere 200 mm lens. Everyone in our group would recommend Wolf Tracker most highly, and another tour with them is a given on any future trip to Yellowstone.

This is my second year experiencing wild life viewing in Yellowstone. Nathan and Linda are not only great tour leaders but extremely knowable about just about everything in the Park. If you want a true winter experience viewing wolves and other wildlife this is the team to lead you. You stay in the heart of the Lamar Valley at the Buffalo Ranch which is a great experience in its self, Chef Zac feeds you 5 star food and the volunteers at the ranch are great.
Will definitely do it again

For the 10th February in a row I travelled from Scotland to YNP to join The Wild Side's Winter Wolf Retreat based at the Lamar Buffalo Ranch in the heart of Lamar Valley. I guess the fact that this was my 10th trip kinda says it all really... From the moment of pick up in Bozeman Nathan and Linda are available to answer questions about all things YNP. Lunch is provided on the first day in Mammoth followed by 3, very tasty, hot meals a day (served buffet style in the Bunkhouse) at the Buffalo Ranch where guests are accommodated in 3 bed cabins. Towels and sleeping bags are provided and bathroom facilities are in the shared, heated bath-house. The accommodation is basic and bathroom breaks in the middle of the night usually mean a cold trip so this might not be for everyone. Each morning is started with breakfast at 6am with everyone expected to be ready to go at 7am to catch possible early morning wildlife activity. It is best to remember that wildlife is just that - WILD! There is no guarantee that you will see wolves and indeed, there have been years when we've not had any sightings or only very distant brief sightings. During this most recent trip we landed very lucky with a fox, coyotes and a howling wolf pack all on the first day's drive to Lamar! I've been lucky in the past too but equally, we've driven straight to Lamar with no critters evident. Nathan and Linda are very experienced at their job and try hard to get wolf sightings (usually involving driving the road and looking - no radio tracking is used) and this most often pays off but nature is nature and they shouldn't be 'blamed' if the wolves don't play ball! We also had Leo join the group this year to share his vast knowledge of the wolves and other YNP critters. The group I visit with have taken this trip many times together over the years and have very realistic expectations. If the wolves 'happen' that's awesome but we are equally content to enjoy any other critters that might be out and about - bison, elk, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, moose, eagles and maybe even otters... We also enjoy each other's company, the awesome scenery and the privilege of getting to stay in the heart of Lamar Valley! 2018 was a lucky year with 3 x 3 'Dog' Days (Fox, Coyote, Wolf) and most of the other animals mentioned above, except otters! Most afternoons the group participate in a snow-shoe hike somewhere in the park though this time can also be used to relax at the Ranch. If you want to experience YNP in winter and are happy with rustic accommodation and awesome food then this would be the trip for you! Bring out the very warm clothes though, it can get really cold in winter and wildlife watching with cold feet isn't pleasant!
