“Impressive New Public Space”
Review of Kiener Plaza

Kiener Plaza
Reviewed 16 July 2017 via mobile

Having arrived in Saint Louis the day before, we strolled down to the Old Courthouse and the Arch on the 1st June, a route that took us past the Plaza which had only been completed two weeks before. The site was full of activity with youth events and stalls and will clearly form a great new public space in the City. It also offers an iconic view of the Courthouse and Arch for photographers.

Kiener Plaza had its time in the spotlight and then quickly went into a dead space. The amphitheater became worn and of no value really. It was like being in someone's dirty basement, with no breeze to be found. It was almost like being in a BBQ pit at times.

NOW, fully revitalized, it sings praises again with multi-use areas. Water features, new plantings and the "pit" is no longer there. Instead, there is a uniquely patterned paved area that ties all of the elements together, along with an egg shaped lawn area to rest on a blanket.

The newly added playground for children was full of fun for many on the day I was there. It was exciting to see children playing in the CITY!

The beautiful "Runner" sculpture is back in it's new home and proud as can be. It gives the entire area a sense that it's familiar, but yet new and inviting. I'm so excited to see how the downtown area is taking advantage of all of the green space, and finding interesting ways to tie downtown west to the Arch grounds. You can see that all of the planning is paying off.

My only complaint is parking. The City really needs to think about what they're going to do with access, if you're not able to walk to the various destinations. It's really pathetic to have no real solution for parking, and to basically extort payments via meters. AND, they limit the time you can use them, basically inviting you to only stay in downtown for a short period. Not very wise. THUS, the 4 stars!

Hopefully this new "park" will grow and become more of a destination, as others realize it's alive and well again in downtown. The recent DNA "Taste of St. Louis" provided a great opportunity to see how it can be leveraged in the coming years!

Go out and enjoy!

The plaza used to host an amphitheater, but no more. Massive concrete walkway. A small playground for children. Two water fountains - one for playing in, and the other warns you not to go into the water. You can get a photo of the Old Courthouse (Dred Scott fame) and the Gateway Arch from this plaza, but don't go looking for something interesting here.

Parking as improved, but given the arch parking is bad, you'll be lucky to find a spot - meters limited to one hour. Saint Louis had an interesting and useful park before they decided to "improve" it. No more. The park is two blocks long, and entry is at the extreme corners. Parking in the middle means a long walk around on the Market Street side

Newly renovated and very upscale. The plants are just gorgeous! There are so many diverse elements to this Plaza. The Runner sculpture with water fountain, marble circular bench, additional water feature, garden areas, organic wooden benches to rest on and a fenced off creative kids play area with an amazing floor. Kids area has unique swing, rope and climbing jungle gym and artsy wood sit-on toys. (Ages 5-12).
Bistro area with tables to enjoy brunch/lunch/dinner from one of the surrounding restaurants. Nice addition to our downtown! Way to go!!

Familiar yet different. The statue of the runner remains and the space is now much more functional for community gathering. The playground is very nice, and is a central spot to walk to citygarden, old court house, or the arch. Can tell that this was a part of the plan to tie the arch project to downtown. Five stars for now - we will see how use patterns develop and how all the new stuff holds up.
