Jesse James Home Museum
Attraction details

House is only 4 rooms. It doesn't take a long time to go thru but packed with lots of items, pictures and stories. We learned so much about the James boys and the events leading up to Jesse's death. Worth the stop!

Advertised opening hours for this museum were at nine, however when we arrived at nine we found other people also waiting to get in. We went next-door to the carousel Museum and the man called to find out when they would be open. It turns out they were actually opening at 9:30. So we left and came back later. The museum is very small but has interesting artifacts. It reminded us of the Lizzie Borden house on a much smaller scale. It contains casting of his skull fragments and teeth. It has no video but has a bit of narration to explain how he was killed. It would've been nice to have a short video or more explanation as to what exactly happened. And it was frustrating to arrive at the advertised time both online and on the door but find out that they were not opening until 30 minutes later.

It's really neat to go inside this home. If you are going to the Pattee house museum then you need to go here also. I love history so if you love history diffently try this.

The tour took less than 10 minutes and really wasn't all that (at least for me). It's 3 and a half rooms and there's the bullet hole in the wall from the shot that killed him. There's some historical info, etc., but I wouldn't pay the $4 entry fee for it again.

First of all, the house was moved there from its original location. Second, none of the furnishings are from the James family. Third, space is very tight, as it's a tiny house. If you have several families going through, it's a tight squeeze.

There is a four minute overview of the James family. You don't really need to stand and listen to it because you can hear it from all three rooms. There are pictures on the walls of the James family and brothers.

The best part is the room explaining the exhumation of Jesse James' body. They have the glass viewing panel fragments laid out, and explanatory notes showing where various items were found in the coffin.

There are a few shelves of gift items. I felt the museum was worth the entry fee, as I know how hard it is to maintain small museums like this (I work at one myself), but many might not.
