Best views on Norfolk Island

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 10 Sept 2016
We had two weeks on Norfolk Island and felt like we were locals when we left. I certainly think I had waved to the whole population while driving around (its what you do - everybody waves!). I think we had also seen everything the island has to offer at least once!

Norfolk Island is basically a country town in the middle of the ocean. It is very friendly and very safe. When was the last time you walked into a bank with no security screens at the counter?

We hired a car from Aloha, which was essential wherever you stay, and they and they made sure I was comfortable in it (6' 6" tall). They also gave us a great rate and there was none of the fuss you get from Avis, Hertz or any other big car rental company.

We had apartment 1, which has that fantastic view of the world heritage area and the ocean, but no balcony (all balconies face over the valley). It had a king size bed and flat screen TV in the living room. Digital TV reception is good and we were able to play movies from a USB. The wifi was awful, but maybe we picked the wrong company - Norfolk Telecom might be better.

The kitchen had all the essentials, but we didn't cook a lot. Norfolk Island has some great cafes and restaurants. All supplies arrive by ship, so the supermarket had minimal fresh fruit & veg and fresh milk cost $8/litre, so we used UHT.

The apartments are showing their age, so this is no luxury resort, but it was comfortable and spacious and the manager and staff were friendly and helpful.

The view from our living room was stunning and I doubt anywhere else Norfolk Island has a view to match.

Room Tip: Room 1 has the best view, otherwise ask for a balcony

I stayed in Unit 1 for a week, looking south over Kingston settlement, Phillip & Nepean Islands & the beautiful ocean. One bedroom, neat & clean, comfy bed, plenty of space, furnishings a little tired, but when you remember everything has to come by ship & lighter, you don't expect 5-star. The apartment is completely self-catered, so first job is to get to the supermarket - don't forget toilet paper & matches to light the gas stove! A hire car is necessary as the apartment is kms away from Burnt Pine where the shopping centre and tour offices are located. Owner Brett thoughtfully provided a mobile phone with pre-paid credit for tour operators to contact me. You can purchase wi-fi vouchers at reasonable rates to use in the various hotspots. There is a common laundry with washing machine but no dryer. In stormy weather the apartment felt like being on a sailing ship (without the motion thank goodness) - rain hitting the large windows, wind whistling and moaning and things creaking - great fun! I would definitely stay again.

Room tip: Units 1 & 2 look over the sea

Why the need for 5 star accommodation when most of the day is spent exploring the island? This place suited me most admirably. Dated, maybe, but very clean and comfortable, with stunning views. I had Unit 1 for 3 nights, then Unit 2 for the other 4. Full marks to owner Brett for his willingness to assist, and his gesture of providing each unit with a mobile phone (with credits). I do recommend Panorama, and it will be my choice when I next visit NI.

These apartments have a magnificent view overlooking Kingston Penal settlement with an easy walk down the hill, with Phillip Island in the distance. We stayed in Unit 2 with a great view. The two bedrooms were comfortable and self contained with everything you need. You should expect accommodation on Norfolk to be clean and comfortable, not luxurious and trendy. They come with a hire car to get you into burnt Pine, the shopping precinct and to explore the island. Will stay there again.

Room tip: Best views are from Units 1 and 2, otherwise rural views over.

We were upgraded to Unit 2 which is overlooking the old penal settlement and the sea with Philip Island
Unfortunately it was very hot during most of our stay but we had great ceiling fans in the bedrooms (not the living area)
Due to the high cost of electricity there is NO air conditioning and cooking is on gas
Clean towels can be obtained by putting the used ones in a provided basket and leaving then outside the unit to be exchanged for clean ones
The units also come with a mobile phone which number is known by the tour providers in case they have to contact you, it is up to you to put credit on it
And NO due to the high cost you do not get free Wi-Fi but can get it locally

Room tip: Units 1 and 2 have the best views

Close to Kingston Heritage site which is it's only plus. I stayed in number 5. It was old, tired, smelly and needs a refurb. Had asked for a seafront room. Thankfully I got a refund for the last nights and moved somewhere else. So can't be all bad...
