Owner description: Visit a significant part of German-American history – and early Missouri settlement – at Deutschheim State Historic Site. Stroll through the restored 1840s and 1850s buildings and explore how German-Americans settled the Hermann area and developed the basis for a Missouri wine industry. Grapevines planted in the 1850s can still be seen on the property as can a number of historic artifacts.

I am so glad we stopped by and took the tour. We were visiting on a Tuesday when the town is a lot more quite than later in the week so we got a private tour. Our tour guide was very knowledgable and friendly. We were able to ask questions and gain more insight. I learned a lot and had a fun time. I would encourage you to take the tour if you are visiting Hermann.

This was an informative tour, lasted about 1.5 hours and only cost $5. We were glad that we decided to do this!

I've been to Germany but I'm not very well-versed on German emigration to Missouri. This trip was a spur-of-the-moment and we stumbled upon this museum by chance, but we were pleasantly surprised. Two buildings, lots of info, tons of knick knacks. My favorite details were the musical instruments, the "map" of what the emigrants expected to find, and the crazy quilt with ribbon strips from the local festivals. Our vice is antiques, not wine, but there is plenty of both in this area. We missed the Maifest by a week, but are considering returning for the solar eclipse in August if we can find a spot to park!

So much to learn about my home state. Missouri is rich in German history and this site is a good source of information. The guide was excellent and provided an great tour. Takes about an hour but is worth the time.
