I admit... I'm a science geek. This place is super neat. Especially getting to see and feed the trout. The educational center is very informative and my kids really enjoyed it. The lake dam was following too which was super neat to see. Definitely worth a visit if your tired of paying $100 to do anything in Branson. It's virtually free...

We love feeding the fish (bring quarters). And since I am a birder, we spent a lot of time there viewing ospreys, bluebirds, hawks, blue herons (there is a rookery across the river), thrashers, and mockingbirds. This is by far my favorite place in Branson!

My wife and I decided to stop by the hatchery one morning for a visit. We've visited several hatcheries in the past and even volunteered at one for a summer, so we enjoy seeing how different hatcheries present themselves.

Shepherd of the Hills has a nice visitor center with many live exhibits of fish, reptiles and amphibians. All include informative display cards. There are other static exhibits inside as well. Outside the raceways were full of fish, and the 25 cent fish food dispensers were getting a workout.

There are also some very nice trails that go along the river to provide fishing access and some enjoyable hiking.

We visited Branson for MLK weekend.

On the drive down from St. Louis I had a few minutes and caught up on a few emails. One of the emails was from MDC / the Missouri Department of Conservation, who was notifying the public that they were about to start displaying a two-headed snake that had recently been found near Branson.

So I set a reminder to call the Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery office first thing in the morning. They did confirm that the snake was indeed just that morning set on display and that they would be open.

So we set plans for a short visit.
We saw the snake and stayed a while longer.

We had visited before, so we were familiar with the trout outside, growing from little trout to big ones ready to be released and possibly caught by our hooks.

So we spent our time inside.

Besides getting up close to the snake in its terrarium (right term, I hope), ew saw some of the location’s other awesome animals, including:
- Trout and bass in a big aquarium
- Several kinds of turtles / tortoises
- One turtle whose shell was hourglass shaped, presumably from him getting stuck inside a six-pack’s plastic strap (reminder to always cut those up before recycling so there are no “closed circles” that could catch on anything
- Some snakes
- Stuffed birds

One the way back to the car we saw several Cardinal birds in a tree - more than we had ever seen before.

We recommend a visit... more than one as you’ll want to learn and re-learn on later trips.

Thank you, MDC, for the great facility and for providing us trout to fish!

This is free and great for adults and kids. You get to see the trout at different stages of life. The kids love to feed them and they learn about trout and how the lakes are restocked. The view of the dam is amazing and if you are there when the locks are open you can experience the power of the water. A great place to stop and spend some time with nature.
