We stayed here because we're Marriott Rewards members. Being Rewards members, we've stayed at lots of Marriott's throughout the US. This has to be our worst Marriott ever. Why? It's the bed.

Other than the bed, it's a typical Marriott. Nothing special and geared towards either business or, in this case, Mayo Clinic visitors. I think a visit to Mayo Clinic is in order after sleeping on the bed. Both my spouse and I woke up with sore backs.

It was the hardest mattress I've ever slept on. A truly miserable experience. For $240 a night, it was ridiculous.

As a Rewards member, I like to stay at Marriott properties, but there is no chance I'll be staying here ever again.

Room Tip: Go to another hotel.

The main strength of this hotel is its proximity to the Mayo Clinic. The hotel is directly connected the the clinic, a 5 minute walk, a great advantage in the winter. Overall, the hotel has a somewhat dated and bland appearance, a facelift of the lobby area and rooms would make the place more attractive. The rooms are reasonably spacious, the desk is large and great for those needing space to work. The gym is well-equipped with a good number of treadmills and elliptical machines, less so for weights. There is a business center with computers for free boarding pass printing, although when I tried, one printer was out of order, the other had a paper jam - another printer near the front desk was functional. I did room serve for a basic breakfast with pastries, coffee and juice - the pastries were disappointing in quality. On checkout, I had to wait for a staff person to return, they seemed understaffed. Finally, another perk of the Mayo Clinic proximity is that you don't need to use the Marriott internet, which requires a daily charge, and instead use the Mayo Clinic guest internet (although strength was variable).

My husband and I go up to the Mayo 4-6 times a year and have stayed many of places in town. This was our first at the Marriott at Mayo. The location is awesome if you are a visitor to the Mayo, since it is connected onto the subway walkway. The room was nice sized, not huge but larger than some of the older hotels downtown. The bathroom was small but it had a vainity sink so two could get ready at once. The bed was very comfortable and with a large selection of pillows, a nice reading light on the bed, and pressed sheet. The room also had a desk and an easy chair and end table (we had a queen room), flat screen tv but limited cable choices which didn't bother us. The pool and spa was closed during our visit---we wanted to go for a splash but it was no big deal. The parking ramp was full the night we arrived and they directed us to the Center ST parking ramp that is connected to the skyway. It ended up being about as close as their parking and cost less evn if you self-park. One of the best bonuses of the trips was that the room had a air filter system (medical grade) in the room. My husband was up there for breathing issues and it was nice entering a room without him choking on foul smells or over-used cleaner/ room freshner. We book the room for an extra night so that my husband could have a sfae place to hang out if he was having breathing issues. We didn't eat the breakfast or at the pub or cafe at the hotel, but it look nice and was offered. The cost was higher than most of our stays in the area but we did get some added benefits so it was well worth it.

Room Tip: We got a queen room over-looking the plaza, It was was nice and could see the door of the Mayo from...

In my opinion, the Marriott in Rochester is the upscale hotel of choice when you can afford the best while you are visiting Mayo Clinic. Better yet, choose to pay $30 more per night or so and take a room on the concierge floor with a comfortable lounge for a full breakfast and a glass of wine and snacks in the evening. Not cheap but a value for what you are getting in comfort and quality.

Room Tip: Pick the concierge floor and your breakfast is included.

I have stayed at numerous Marriott hotels in recent years and have always been very satisfied, but this particular hotel is just average. The front desk staff were rude and clueless, the food at Saints restaurant was terrible, and some of our bath towels were stained. However, the room was spacious and the beds were very comfortable
