Inn on Gitche Gumee
Ranked #7 of 11 Duluth B&B and Inns

We have stayed at the Inn on Gitchee Gumee twice. Each unique suite or cabin is decorated with rustic Lake Superior themes, many items hand-hewn by the owners. Throughout the summer, the grounds are an explosion of color with floral gardens, shrubs, water features, and hummingbirds. The firepit blazes at night where guests can visit or just gaze across the starlit water. A custom breakfast is delivered to the room each morning, and a visit to the sweet gift shop offers something for everyone. Of course, the view of Gitchee Gumee is spectacular.

This 9 cabin resort is on North Shore Senic Drive. The owners have made the cabins & many of the artistic furnishings out of the timber including the queen size beds. The 2BR, 1BA is $200/night & has everything including Internet, fireplace, & big TV. It has 2 futons & is perfect for families. Breakfast is served whatever time works for you. The other smaller cabins have queen beds in a BR or in a studio apartment. All have frontal lake view decks.

If you really want to experience what is so famous about the North Shore of Lake Superior, this has it all. First, the site is removed enough from the Lake that you won't get battered in a storm, but close enough that the shimmering chi of its water bathe you in all seasons. Second, the decor is personal, north woodsy and therefore non-corporate. Complaints on this site about a black fly or two in the room indicate an abhorrence for nature that does not belong here. If you leave the door open, insects come in. Poisoning the room with Raid is criminal. There was a fly swatter on the windowsill waiting to do the job. Third, the hosts are very loving, serene people who exude the kindness and calm that people are trying to recapture in this natural grandeur. The B&B is close to Duluth (15 minute drive), in easy distance of hiking/biking, has a great gift shop, and is a 3 minute drive from the best restaurant in the state: The New Scenic Cafe. The front yard is landscaped for gardeners, barbecues, and kids' play areas. Also, the breakfast is fabulous. We had a large platter for two with crepes and maple syrup, spicy omelet over bacon strips, and fresh fruit. There is, of course, a proper coffee maker in the room.

Unfortunately I failed to search prior reviews before arriving at the inn. When we arrived and entered the 3 Bears Cottage I was sorely disappointed to find the pictures posted on their site did not accurately reflect the well-worn condition of the accommodations. The king size bed was very uncomfortable and the queen room's decor was a bit creepy. Our group ended up sleeping on the futons in the living room. There were several large black flies in the unit that prompted me to go out and buy some Raid soon after we checked in. If you're looking for a very rustic experience this place would be ok for you. I was not, so we ended up leaving the next day even though we paid for two nights.

We had a fantastic time at the Inn on Gitche Gumee! We stayed in the Hideout cabin, which was clean, had a comfy bed, and a whirlpool tub. Each morning we'd drink our coffee on the deck overlooking the lake (across the road) and the beautiful grounds. One night they even set us up for a bon fire. An added bonus was the homemade breakfast, and the fact this place is dog friendly!

You are not far from Duluth, and the drive into town was really nice. This place is so much better than your typical hotel chain, you won't be disappointed.
