Located on West Road east of Interstate 75 in the suburb of Brownstown Township, Olympic Coney Island is a good example of a Coney Island restaurant. The Coney Island hot dog (or simply “coney”) is what most of the world outside the Detroit metropolitan area would refer to as a chili dog. If you drive around the region you’re bound to pass a Coney Island restaurant at some point.
The coney at Olympic features a wiener that has a nice snap when you bite into it. It’s dressed in traditional coney fashion with chili, mustard and lots of onions – it’s also very messy. The chili has a good texture and is well spiced without an overabundance of heat. Coney Island restaurants are traditionally owned by Greek-American families, and the menu at Olympic features many Greek favorites in addition to the expected hot dogs and hamburgers. They also have an extensive breakfast menu as well as delicious-looking pies.
The restaurant was clean, the prices were fair, and the service was prompt, efficient and friendly. So, if you’re not in the mood for fancy food and would prefer basic food that is reflective of the region, this would be a place to consider.
