My wife and I were hard pressed in locating a Bed and Breakfast that would accommodate our budget, time, and was also was located in the Michigan area of our interest. This was also complicated due to the unpredictable weather-like month that October brings the Mid-West each year. Thankfully we received a good recommendation from a family member to test out Monroe Manor and we must admit were not at all disappointed!

Upon arrival to Monroe we took notice that though the facility was relativity close to the high way it was still far enough at a distance where the noise was not an issue. The grounds looked clean and up kept and the building itself was beautiful.

Nancy was the first to greet us upon entering the front door. She was very warm and extremely hospitable. She proceeded to give us a quick tour of the first floor and then took us upstairs to our room. Our room, Arbor Room, was spectacular, better than the pictures on their website! It has a very large, recently renovated, bathroom with a large, nicely tiled, standing shower. The TV was very small but was not important to us at all.

Each of the two mornings that we stayed Nancy prepared a delicious homemade breakfast, accompanied by freshly brewed coffee and orange juice. The Monroe grounds has a lovely Jacuzzi hot tub large enough for a small group of people. We had the opportunity to take a dip in the evening under the stars, a nice way to stay warm during the cold weather we experienced.

Breakfast, when the weather is poor, is served inside at a large table. My wife and I were, at first, somewhat against this because we typically like to stay to ourselves when we have the opportunity to do so. But this time we were able to meet some lovely people who were also celebrating their anniversaries. There was one couple who just wanted a few days to get away from Chicago so it was a nice diverse group. This turned out to be a pleasant experience, getting to know other people over a warm, delicious, meal. Make sure if you have any allergies to inform Nancy ahead of time. Our pumpkin waffle, though delicious, had many nuts in it, and though I didn't mind, and am not allergic, would have preferred to have been informed ahead of time.

The only things we would have changed:

1) The Weather. When we arrived the temperature was approximately 45-50 degrees F. Not their fault obviously but it limited our time spent outside on the beach and quickened our pace when traveling between the different shopping areas.

2) Although Nancy gave us a coupon to the local winery, which was AMAZING and we highly recommend that everyone take advantage of, we would have preferred to have had an open wine hour with horderves inside Monroe. They do explain on their website that they are no longer able to serve alcohol but do allow you to bring in your own. This really is not a complaint but just an observation/suggestion.

3) Thin walls. Just to inform, each room is directly next to one another and you can often hear the other guests conversing/listening to music from the other rooms.

Summary Review:
Monroe Manor is a beautifully warm Bed and Breakfast that offered a unique experience that my wife and I would not have received if we had stayed at a different location in South Haven, MI. We highly recommend this B&B to anyone traveling to the South Haven area. There are many things to see, good food to eat, and beautiful beach all within a 2-3 minute drive. We thank Nancy for her hospitality and hope to return again.

We traveled to the South Haven area with friends and wanted a B and B experience. We were greeted by Nancy who showed us our rooms and talked to us about activities and restaurants in the area. Our rooms were clean, but a second chair and a ceiling fan would be good additions--both our room and our friends' next door were terribly stuffy. We both opened windows to get air in. Also, the shower in the Magnolia Room really isn't big enough for two people as advertised. We all enjoyed the front porch, and having breakfast on the porch was a treat. Breakfasts were very good, and their coffee is excellent. It would be nice to have the option of coffee in addition to tea late in the day. While they aren't able to serve wine, they do offer free tasting coupons to the Fennville winery as a consolation, and wine glasses are provided if you wish to bring your own. The property is pretty and the parking is convenient, too. We'd stay again.

Beautiful. Cozy. Food is excellent! Very friendly staff. Breakfast was served out on the covered porch. Love the friendly welcoming pineapple decore. The heated towel rack was a nice suprise. I like that it is out of town, yet close enough to go and enjoy the day in South Haven. We have been to S.H. numerous times and this was our first overnight trip. Definitely will do this trip again.

It was quiet (you can hear the faint noise from the expressway buzz, but it's not a distraction IMO). Breakfast was good. The host was very friendly. Massage was incredibly relaxing. It's close enough to town and several wineries. They had a great winter weekend deal, which made our stay even more affordable. It was exactly what we wanted for a quiet, relaxing weekend for 2.

Monroe Manor is by far my boyfriend and my favorite bed and breakfast. The grounds are absolutely beautiful and the wraparound porch is amazing (especially the porch swing!). The house itself is one of the classiest and well restored homes we have stayed in. We have stayed in every room in the bed and breakfast and they are all wonderful. However, we stayed in the master suite for our most recent stay and it was so romantic; canopy bed, claw foot tub, and fireplace. The breakfasts are always delicious and Doug and Nancy are wonderful hosts. The free wine tasting at Fennville Winery is a nice touch and a very fun outing.

The town of South Haven is quaint with some good restaurants to choose from. Clementines is always a good bet and reasonably priced. Try the old fashioned movie theater in town that plays first run movies. You are stepping back in time to the 1950's, so fun. Popcorn and soft drinks are self serve and super cheap. You can see an evening movie for $6! We will continue to go back to Monroe Manor!
