Marvelous and largely intact historic fortification. A must to see. Moderate walking go through all major gates for pictures.

Loved it

walkung thru this magnificent fortress designed by vauban..& its quaint medieval village surrounds within is magical..watching the hues of the leaves change...the estuary the iles scattered on the horizon....an experience...the solitude ...the wind rustling the leaves ...a refrain from the past...even the bustle of town below lends to the medieval magic.

This is attraction is free to enter and stands impressive by the river. The citadel shows excellent fortifications and the inner city has various parts to it. Some of the old building are now gift/craft shops and eateries and there is a hotel/restaurant within the walls. There is also a motor home/caravan park on the inside and outside the grounds. It covers quite an area so be prepared for some walk over uneven ground. We had a guide who told us the history of the citadel and its occupants over the years.

A bit of history, great views of the Gironde but also restaurants, shops and a hotel. It's a big area, plenty of space to stretch little legs.

We weren't going to visit the Citadel thinking it was just another ancient fortress but we were so wrong. It is located above the quaint town of Blaye and on the estuary. The views are stunning. Once past the outer wall you discover a little village almost lost in time inside. So worth visiting.
