We weren't going to visit the Citadel thinking it was just another ancient fortress but we were so wrong. It is located above the quaint town of Blaye and on the estuary. The views are stunning. Once past the outer wall you discover a little village almost lost in time inside. So worth visiting.

Lovely place, well kept and well worth the visit. Inside there is a couple of shops and authentic French restaurants serving authentic French foods, staff good at explaining menu if your French is not hot. Quaint Antique shop however it is expensive, Tourist prices. There are two other Antique shops in the town very cheap if interested with more authentic item. Hot tip, don't enter by the main gate if you have a car, drive through the town following the walls for a rear entrance, which is less of a walk for those with walking problems. FREE entrance.

A worthwhile visit to see. Plenty of activity around with shops and so much green space. Situated along side the river

The citadel le perched above the town of Blaye on the Gironde estuary north of Bordeaux.
It's really and impressive structure and very large. You can see why it's a UNESCO world heritage site.
It doesn't take long to walk around but the views are beautiful.
And you can even take your evening meal here.

What a stunning attraction, it's an absolutely fabulous place. As we approached through the gated citadel it gave us a real feel of what it must have been like as a fortress many years ago. It is so well looked after, picture perfect in every corner.
When you climb to the highest viewing point the photo opportunities are endless.
Inside there are shops, restaurants, a camping site and a hotel.
All the grassed areas are so well tended and it's clear the Blaye Commune are really proud of their famous attraction.
