The citadel le perched above the town of Blaye on the Gironde estuary north of Bordeaux.
It's really and impressive structure and very large. You can see why it's a UNESCO world heritage site.
It doesn't take long to walk around but the views are beautiful.
And you can even take your evening meal here.

What a stunning attraction, it's an absolutely fabulous place. As we approached through the gated citadel it gave us a real feel of what it must have been like as a fortress many years ago. It is so well looked after, picture perfect in every corner.
When you climb to the highest viewing point the photo opportunities are endless.
Inside there are shops, restaurants, a camping site and a hotel.
All the grassed areas are so well tended and it's clear the Blaye Commune are really proud of their famous attraction.

A step back in time by many centuries

Great walks and views from the citadel with a range of shops and craft workshops to visit and engage in.

Truly different and on a scale that has to be seen to be believed.

Lovely old fortress on the river banks offering great views of the river and opposite shore. The fortress itself has within it a number of nice little shops with interesting handmade crafts, vintage clothing, antiques, etc., as well as a hotel and restaurant. Well worth a visit if you're in the area.
