a lovely place to spend a few hours having just arrived in Nicaragua. A fascinating place with some amazing bird life too. Views are pretty good too.

We loved visiting the ruins, hearing about the history from the tour guide, who was very informative, and the view of Momotombo volcano was spectacular! There isn't much else in the area, but someone suggested we go to Origin Adventure Park next to Asososca Lagoon. After a morning of history it was great to feel the rush of the Tarzan swing and then swim in the lagoon afterwards. One of the best days of our trip!

After being to ruins around the world, I love the opportunity to compare and contrast. These ruins are relatively protected and a UNESCO site. They were discovered by a farmer, much like the Terra Cotta army in China. The area is lush and beautiful. Great views of Mombotombo.

A UNESCO World Heritage site, the ruins of this once capital city reminds us of the power of nature and what an earthquake and distant volcano can do. Our guide made the history of the event in 1610 interesting and educational. We walked a good distance around what used to be one of the oldest cities in the Americas to look at the foundation stones, while imagining what the city must’ve looked like then. At the end you are taken up a small hill to an overlook of Lake Managua to view the still active volcano, Momotombo....

The site seems eerily quiet. My imagination always get a little carried away walking around architectural digs such as Leon Viejo. The level of energy that must have gone into building this abandoned city must have been impressive. The quietude today is broken by the song of variety of birds and the crunching of sand and pebbles beneath one's feet. Its history definitely sets the tone for what life was like in early colonial Nicaragua. The stories surrounding the city's proximity to Momtombo are colorful and fanciful (or are they that fanciful?). Taking some time to take in the sight of gently steaming. smoking Momtombo proved very relaxing. I'm not sure what local guide resources might be available; our program guide was quite knowledgeable about both the history of the city and the nearby wildlife.
