You would never know how good the food is by looking at the store front. But walk inside and see just how plentiful and varied the buffet is. The buffet isn't cheap but it is good. I really enjoyed the dahl and butter chicken. There is plenty of seating. The service (when needed) is quick and friendly. They clearly know that their clientele need to get in and back to their offices.

Too many non-descript Indian restaurants populate nondescript suburban strip malls, but House of India is NOT one of them. Although the location may be non-descript, the food is very, very good. The dining room is pleasant, if standard issue. The service is friendly and competent. But it's the food that stands out and of course that's what you want in a restaurant.

All of our dishes, except one were quite good. The one exception was the Vegetable Samosas. The just right crust couldn't make up for the bland filling, although the dips gave them a bit of character. The other dishes were all quite accomplished. The Lamb Rogan Josh combined plentiful tender lamb with a zesty, but not spicy tomato-based sauce. The sauce for the Chicken Makhani was a sweet and sour looking electric red, but tasted nothing like it and complemented rather than overwhelmed the tandoori chicken pieces. Even the Vegetable Korma, which can often be bland, had character and complexity and the vegetables retained their texture and flavor rather than dissolving into mush. I could eat the fine grained Basmati rice all day by itself; just perfect. The soft, floppy, and chewy Garlic Naan lacked the garlic zip and crackling crust that I prefer, but worked just fine with the dishes.

In all, with its large portions of very good food, House of India represents a fine addition to the Columbia restaurant scene.

This is the only place we go to for Indian buffet. They have the best lunch buffet not only in Howard County but I think in MD. And it's cheap, too, for the quality of food.

OK, it's a hole-in-the-wall place in a strip mall.
Service can be a bit "iffy".
But there is no denying that the chef knows what he is doing.
I have tried just about everything on the menu, but I always return to any of their sauced dishes served in a heated bowl with jasmine rice - yummy!
Large range of curries. Lamb dishes are their specialty. Great place to take your vegetarian friends.

Went there for dinner and had the dinner for 2. Everything was amazing. Started with the lentil soup, excellent. Moved onto the Chicken Tikka and Sheek Kabab, both very tasty. Then we had the Vegetable Korma and Chicken curry. Everything was excellent. It was very hard to pick a favorite. We ran out of the basmati rice that came with dinner and they just brought us another plate full, didn't even have to ask. The meal finished with mango ice cream. Just flat out perfect. There was nothing bad to say about the meal. We both had ice tea and it was Indian and you could definitely taste the spices.
