“Amazing granite staircase built into the mountainside.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 April 2012

This is a beautiful trail with great views of Long Pond and surrounding mountains. There are something like 800 granite steps in this trail which was built close to 100 years ago. Moderately strenuous, lots of fun. My favorite descent is by the Razorback Trail, but you have lots of choices. Bring a map!

“Best Hike in the Park”

Lived up to its reputation. What a masterpiece. The views were amazing, the hike challenging but lots of fun. Can't wait to get back to do it again

“Stairway to gorgeous summit views”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 September 2011

Perpendicular Trial ascends Mt. Mansell counter clockwise from the parking area at the southern end of Long Pond. (If you travel south along Mansell Mountain trail you can make this a 2.4 mile loop, taking Cold Brook trail back to your car.) The 2 sides of the loop are very different--Perpendicular Trail is mostly granite stairs up the 949' mountain. There are fabulous views of Long Pond and Bass Harbor. (If stairs aren't appealing, you can do the loop clockwise to the summit, and retrace to miss the stairs completely.) This is a fairly strenuous trail, but not dangerous with the narrow ledges of some of the trails in the eastern part of the park. It is in the quieter part of Acadia, away from the crowds.

“Wow - this is not for the faint hearted”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 September 2011

The Perpendicular Trail is just that - it goes straight up the side of a cliff with amazing views. You hkie along ledges until you think you can go no further - and then you find a wrought iron ladder imbedded ing the rock face and you are forced to climb to the next ledge. It is the most amazing experience and you can't believe they let just anybody do it. It is a little terrrifying, but only dangerous if your careless or you let go.
