“Gorgeous Home on the Quietest Lake”

My very large family (my sisters, their spouses, their children, my parents and my husband and son) stayed at Kill Kare in July and loved our stay. All of my communications for nearly a year before our arrival with owner Catherine were so easy and friendly that when we finally met in person it felt like meeting an old friend.

Catherine and her family have taken incredible care of this very special home and we really loved staying there. Every single room in the house looked exactly like the photos online, although pictures cannot really do the house and lake justice. The kitchen was the most well equipped kitchen I have ever encountered in a rental and Catherine has clearly spent a lot of time thinking of every need her guests might have. There were restaurant suggestions, maps and brochures for every attraction for miles around, even a listing of when large cruise ships dock in nearby Bar Harbor so you could pick a day to visit without crowds.

We pretty much lived on the porch during the parts of the week that we weren't exploring the gorgeous surrounding area and gorging ourselves on lobster rolls. The nearby towns and harbors were easy 15 minute to an hour drives away which made going on small side trips easy without feeling like you were missing a full day away from the beautiful lake. Walker Pond itself was so lovely and so quiet that you couldn't help but relax while sitting on the porch.

We had an absolutely wonderful time and would readily recommend the home to anyone looking for a grand old home on a beautiful lake in Maine.

“the family camp you always dreamed of”
Reviewed 13 August 2015 for a stay in August 2015

we just got back from a week stay at Killkare and I have to say I am tearing up a bit reflecting about just how perfect it was. The cottage is at once gracious and homey. You walk in and can feel that many people have loved it for a very long time. The pond is right there and our week was spent with our large family catching up on a sunny porch while our many extended young cousins swam for hours. Every thing from the lovely decor to the lobster dinner equipment has been thought out. This is a place where people have come to relax and be together for years and after one week we hope to be one of the familes that return over and over again. Nothing but thanks and praise for our lovely hosts, their gracious hospitality, and their stunning and perfect home away from home.

“Perfect for a family gathering!”
Reviewed 30 July 2015 for a stay in July 2015

We booked this facility quite some time in advance for the express purpose of bringing our entire family together under one roof for the first time since our children became adults (and the two older ones are now in their 40s). We knew I was to undergo major surgery three weeks prior to our scheduled arrival date so my own attendance was up in the air.

The seven of us arrived on the last Sunday in June, in a light rain and the Larsons were waiting for us in the front yard, volunteering to help us move our cargo down to the cottage. This delightful two story home was built by Mrs. Larson's grandfather in 1917, and is partially supported on a huge bolder jutting out from the magnificent lake it is situated on.

The Larsons had loaded the stone fireplace with everything needed to start a cozy fire, they had supplied ample firewood as well as a huge supply of pine starter sticks.

Having done vacation rentals in the past we expected we'd have to supply our own spices and that we'd find a pretty sparse inventory of cooking utensils - not so here! Just about every imaginable spice was provided and the amount of cooking ware and appliances was far more than enough. Being in lobster country there were several lobster pots plus the hand utensils so vital to a successful lobster feast - though I didn't count, I'd venture to say that there was probably sufficient for a feast for at least 16 persons. And coffee makers (2), a toaster, food processors - suffice it to say that the kitchen is fully outfitted.

Each bedroom had its own personality, and the cottage sleeps ten persons quite comfortably.

Games - all of the favorites were there. And puzzles galore. And for star gazers there was a very nice astronomical telescope with tripod.

The personality of what must have been a very tight knit and loving family shines in every single room - Mrs. Larson's grandmother loved antiques and the decor and furnishings show it.

Our group ranged from my 10 year old grandson up to 74 year old me and included a 16 year old boy - during our stay everyone interacted with everyone else. And because, blessedly, the nearest internet connection was up the hill at the Larson's home, we all remained pretty much disconnected during our entire visit which everyone quickly adjusted to.

We had fishing folks in our group - this location was great for that. There's an excellent dock that is attached to the wrap-around balcony and the lake is stocked with trout and bass. My son-in-law caught several bass one evening, casting off or the dock into an underwater collection of stones that used to support an earlier dock that is no longer there - a perfect hiding spot for fish.

Obtaining a canoe or kayak is a no brainer - the service provider delivers and picks up according to your schedule. We had a canoe and kayak awaiting our arrival, already on property.

There was plenty to do in the area to keep us entertained - we had some pleasant day trips. And an extremely well stocked supermarket is only 15 minutes or so away from the cottage.

Buying live lobster is a no-brainer. There's a Christmas store about 20 minutes from the cottage that has live tanks in the rear of the store and various sizes of live lobsters at only $7.95 a pound.

Summing up? We had the most marvelous week together that one could possibly imagine. The cottage is spacious enough to ensure that someone seeking some "alone time" can find it, yet provides ample room for the entire family to gather together, be it for a meal, a game, or just some great conversation. I would do a repeat in a heartbeat!

“Lovely Lakefront cottage!!”
Reviewed 30 July 2015 for a stay in July 2015

This was our first trip to Kill Kare and boy were we amazed. The secluded cottage has everything to offer from a more than well equipped kitchen to a cozy living room with a beautiful stone fireplace that we used every night to plenty of bedroom space to the huge wrap-around porch. overlooking the lake... our favorite place to relax.
We enjoyed sunbathing on the dock, kayaking throughout the day, and watching wonderful sunsets from the porch. Only about an hour from Acadia and Bar Harbor too!
Cathy and Dan were very hospitible. They had any information you needed including driving very detailed driving directions to places we wanted to explore, farmers markets, grocery shopping, sites to see. You name it, they had it covered. Oh and we must mention that they are very pet friendly. When we arrived there were food bowls, treats, and tennis balls with our dogs initials on them. There was also a yummy freshly baked banana bread for us! We had a wonderful family trip!!!
