Owner description: In the 1800s, Captain Moody used this observatory to monitor the routes of ships as far as 30 miles away. Today visitors can tour a museum focusing on the history of the watch tower and get a stunning bird's-eye view of Portland and the harbor.

Liked it, welcoming, easy-to-find, but didn't venture to top. Fee.

The docents are very knowledgeable about this piece of Portland history. The admission is well worth it. There are a fair number of stairs to get to the top, however there is a short talk on each floor to explain the building's structure and use. The view from the top allowed people of the time to see ships coming into port first. Still a great view today!

Great views and historic interest. Fun things to do on Munjoy Hill as well. Great restuarants and walking distance of OldPort

The docent who guided me was 86 ~ it was embarrassing how much quicker he was than I. The observatory sits on a hill and rises eight stories, the view of Portland is commanding. The historical & construction information is thorough, interesting and well presented. You can ask all the questions you want. And while you learn about the Observatory and Portland you'll climb a lot of stairs. I promise, the view is worth the creaky knees. I went on a cloudy, misty morning and it was still a wonderful view. Go. If you are at all to climb ~ go. If can't do the stairs, there is ramp to the first floor and you can still hear great stories, you'll just miss the view. Don't forget to make a donation and/or buy a souvenir, the Observatory is non-profit.
