“Worst experience ever”

The owner misrepresented the cottage as pet friendly. Upon arrival she knocked on our door, flustered and told us that she was not accepting dogs. She then needed to conference with her booking manager about it. When I explained it was very clear in our emails that we would have two well behaved dogs and she accepted that, she left in a fluster. We decided to make other arrangements since we didn't feel welcomed. I told the front desk we were leaving and would expect a refund. Suddenly the owner had a change of heart and begged me to stay, saying it was her misunderstanding and they were very happy to allow dogs and in fact other guests were coming with them as well. We decided to stay against our better judgement and were treated as though we were 13 years old with unannounced visits from the owner and notes being left on the door. The harassment was enough to make us cut our stay short. She succeeded in ruining not only our vacation but our anniversary as well. All things being equal, the cottage was not equipped as stated and lacked basic supplies. The employees seem friendly but the owner is confused at best, and shady on any given day. To top it off she refused to refund the nights that we did not stay due to her harassment. Overall the worst rental experience I could imagine.

The tenant is correct that there was confusion between the owner and her agent as to whether dogs were permitted in Sea Mist and the Owner takes responsibility for the miscommunication which has since been resolved. However, the tone of the criticism is not warranted or fair. The owner did not intentionally misrepresent and apologized to the tenant for the mistake and agreed to allow the dogs.

Fluster, harassment, begged, unannounced visits, shady etc are not representative of the Owner or her conduct in this or any other case. In fact the guest arrived a couple of hours early and announced that he needed a shower. Although the cabin had been cleaned, it had not been outfitted with the usual supplies and those were brought to the tenant after he had moved in, but before the stated move in time-hence we suppose the “unannounced visits.” The owner does not know what equipment was absent or “basic supplies” the cabin lacked, because the tenant never asked for such items. If he had, the owner would have happily obtained them.

A note was left on the tenant’s door, because several people mentioned that the dogs were left alone and were barking incessantly, which both disturbs other guests but also causes concerns that the dogs may not be alright.

As for the failure to refund money, the owner was never contacted directly by the tenant and frankly, even if she had been, the owner questions whether the circumstances warranted a refund, at least without a discussion with the tenant. All in all, the owner is extremely sorry that the tenant did not enjoy his stay, but believes there are two sides to the story.

We take great pride in our cottages and enjoy hosting our many guests. We hate to see a “bad” review, especially as we are new to the FlipKey community - not to mention one bad review is just too many! However, because of our many repeat guests and the numerous enthusiastic reviews of our cottages (often ratings of 5 out of 5) on various rental sites, we knew that this review is not the norm.

Though this was a serious matter, it has certainly provided my family with ample material for humor at my expense! For the holiday weekend I was introduced as “my shady mother” and there was talk of presenting me with a “shady lady” t-shirt.

Well it’s time for this “shady lady” to move on. It’s a beautiful day in Maine; lots of work to be and life is good.
