“Old Fashioned Fun”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 November 2011

I look forward to returning to this charming collection of cabins by the water in Maine. We sat out a hurricane this year and were snug and dry in the storm. Location is convenient for seeing the sights or relaxing on the porch and watching the bay.

This is a favorite overnight stops on our travels from Boston to Bar Harbor. Recently stayed here in one of the cabins in October. It is located just outside the town of Belfast which has some nice shops, restaurants, and waterfront; however, there is a great little restaurant within walking distance beside the motel unit. The cabins range from rustic to recently renovated. All are near the waterfront with views and easy access to the water. Some are right on the waterfront. We also stayed in cabin 33 as did another reviewer. It was a 2 BR and recently renovated with everything we wanted and needed, including a covered porch with water view to sit under while it rained outside. So enjoyable.... This would also be a great place for families and includes many areas to swim and play, and be active at a reasonable price. Not fancy, but a very good value for the location.

Room Tip: Some cabins are are a bit old, but some are newly renovated, quite nice, and have everything you wan...

We spent a night in one of the cabins and loved it, seriously regretted that we had not booked for several nights.
While we were a little sceptical beforehand (would it be comfortable in the cabin in October when nights get colder? would the property be well maintained - we drove by some rather run-down cottage motels during our trip), we were totally amazed by the highy quality of the materials, the equipment and the way how the little space was used in a perfect way. The shower was better than many showers I have seen in hotels, and the cabin was comfortably heated, we did not feel cold at all.
The view of the sea by opening the door to the porch and the possibility to start the day with a walk on a beach with hardly any other people were fantastic as well.
We hope to have the chance to come back some other time and spend more time at Colonial Gables.
Found the lady at the reception very friendly and did not mind having to wait a little longer for the checkín/check-out process.

We recently stayed at the Colonial Gables Ocean Village and overall were satisfied with our stay. They have both motel rooms and cottages--we stayed in the motel. This is definitely an older property (probably 30 to 40 years old) but is maintained very well. The grounds are well kept and the view of the water is very nice. No breakfast is provided. Pick up one of the lodging discount books at a Maine visitors center for a nice savings. (Unfortunately we did not.) If you are looking for a Hilton, this is not the place but overall we were satisfied.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 September 2011

We stayed in cabin 33, recently renovated and found it to be extremely clean, very well appointed, with quality furnishings. The facilities were more than adequate for a very comfortable stay and the siting of no.33 could not have been much better, as we had superb views of Penobscot Bay, both from the porch and inside at least two rooms. They seem to have a policy of on-going renovations, so, if you book in advance, it pays to ask for a recently done cabin. As I have said, we can't vouch for the motel or all of the cabins, but we could not fault our particular one.
With regard to criticism of the sweet old lady who runs the complex, yes, her system may seem quaint to anyone used to more modern fast-track check-ins, but we found that to add to the relaxing atmosphere of the place. She, herself was very helpful and patient, especially when, we couldn't find no.33, when it was right under our noses.
In all we spent three very happy nights there and would go again like a shot if in the area.

Room Tip: Ask for a renovated cabin!
