A great place to base oneself in the Southern Flinders

We had stayed in one of the cottages last year and we were determined to do so again. We booked for 3 mid week nights and drove out from there to local destinations.

The cottage was comfortable, with a good bed and covers that warded off the very chilly night air, kitchen, TV etc. The individual balcony overlooked the town common and fields beyond with a wind pump. The bakery restaurant is famous for its pies and pasties and these are indeed superb. The passing trade was very substantial with people stopping for a pie or pasty, and a coffee.

Included in our fee was breakfast each morning. We chose omelettes, vegetarian or with bacon. These were wonderful and very filling.

The restaurant also has a bar and we chose Blesing's chardonnay each afternoon when we judged it was 'wine o'clock'. There is a small selection of local wine that one can also purchase by the bottle to take to one's cottage.

From Stone Hut we drove out to Melrose, Bartagunya Winery high in the hills just south of Melrose off the Old Survey Track, Jamestown, and the 'big battery' in the middle of many wind turbines, and Terowie which is very worth while seeing.

Stone Hut itself is worth walking around as many historic structures have information boards describing them.

Room Tip: There are about 8 cabins, and some apartments in a larger building. The cabins are very good for...

We enjoyed our stay at the cottage, which faced a quiet side road. The staff at the bakery were very friendly (especially Michelle) and the pies were delicious, especially the lamb and rosemary pie! We would have given this place a 5 star rating, but on arrival we found skid marks in the toilet bowl, hairs on the shower floor, and the exhaust fan in the kitchenette area didn't look like it had been cleaned in years. As paying guests, we expected a higher standard of cleaning. However, the sheets were clean and the bed was very comfortable. Overall, we did enjoy our stay, and thought we got good value for what we paid.

We came here to experience the pies and weren't disappointed. The Pies at Stone Hut Bakery are some of the best pies we have had and reasonably priced too. The wine is great and also well priced. Really enjoyed the free wine tasting after our meals too.

The Pies at Stone Hut Barker are some of the best pies we have had. We enjoy the outdoor area with bird life, but would like to see some more Magpies! Keep up the great work, we will definitely be back

What a great find in Stone Hut. A fabulous bakery with the BEST homemade pies and pasties. Michelle was a great help with helping us with our uncle whose in a wheelchair. Being from the states, she took our picture for us, attached.
They also offer a wide variety of cold drinks. An absolutely amazing place to stop.
