Owner description: The mother church of the Acadians, this lovely 162-year-old church sits in the heart of charming St. Martinville.

I enjoyed my visit very much, the Evangeline statue pulls at your heart, and the little cemetary is well worth a visit. I attended mass unexpectedly (happened to go to take pictures of the statue just as mass was starting). I was warmly welcomed (in travelling clothes) and enjoyed the service very much. I'm not very religious, but it was an uplifting experience to go to Church in a place where people have prayed for over 160 years. The building is lovely inside too. Well worth the short pleasant drive from Lafayette and area.

This church has a lot of history behind it. The pews have little gates at the aisle and the most interesting perch from which the mass is said. This building is right in the center of town and close to the Evangeline Oak. It also houses many historic records.

I can see how this church is the spiritual center of Cajun Country. Its architecture is beautiful without being ornate, the statuary exudes spirituality, and the overall feeling is warm/comfort.

The church is the anchor of the main square of this lovely little town. I'd like to think that all the towns of the area once looked like this before the modern motel/fast food era arrived. But if St. Martinville is a step back in time, even more so is this remarkable church, which clearly has for centuries provided the focus of activities for so much of this town. We stumbled on this town and we're delighted that we did. Nothing shows off the living acadian heritage better.

The history of the church predates the expulsion of the Acadians. It is the fourth oldest church in the State of Louisiana. Built in 1836 on the site of a previous church, it is the "mother church" of the Acadians. The architecture is magnificant, the very old burial grounds and memorials are so interesting as is the statue of "Evangeline".Beautiful grounds...we took many photos.
