You'll never tell people about the fancy oyster bar you just went to. Or the fancy seafood restaurant. However, if you want local authentic, this is the place. It's a bar with a restaurant. It's famous for its oysters, and rightly so. The waiters are mostly long timers and it doesn't take too many visits for them to get to know you. The burgers are great but the seafood really shines. Nothing fancy, just great gumbo and fried fish. I've never tried any of their steaks or "non-local" seafood, but have been told it's also tasty. Definitely non pretentious and well worth the visit.

Daughter & I had lunch last week, both ordering the seafood gumbo & the half italian salad. As usual, the gumbo was outstanding, service prompt & the salad great as usual.
You have to be a relative of a waiter to work there, I'm told. Daughter asked what the object sen in you photo hanging above the bar was-it looked like a hornet's nest-but was
actually an old pair of boxing gloves tied together! Years ago, it was custom to take visiting sales reps to lunch at the Mohawk; years & years ago one asked me when they were going to update the decor...my answer: but they have!!!

In 1968, my very first real “car date” was dinner and a movie. While I don’t remember the name of the latter, the name of the former was to Mohawk Tavern on Louisville Ave. in Monroe---and the food was exceptional (as much as I could taste—admittedly I was quite nervous). Fast forwarding 50 years later, after much time away and many other restaurants (and dates), I visited the Mohawk Tavern on Louisville again. Nothing had changed. Truly - literally NOTHING! Same hangings on the wall, same cigarette machine in the restaurant (except that now it isn’t working), and same exceptional food. It is a testament to the restaurant that in changing times, the quality of the food has remained consistently exceptional.

What has changed, and what is NOT exceptional, was the service on the most recent visit. When my sister and I recently visited the restaurant for lunch, the pace was very slow. Understandable…we arrived as they opened for business, and after all..it IS lunch. But what was not understandable was:
1 Her order was stuffed crab, and the server delivered stuffed shrimp. When advised of the mix-up, the server said “I thought you said stuffed shrimp” and walked away. No offer to exchange, no apology, offer to compensate, nothing. It is a good thing she likes stuffed shrimp too!
2 An delivery of restaurant supplies (cooking oil, napkins, take-out plates, etc.) was received at the back door during our meal. It was the job of the servers to move the delivery from the back door to the restaurant storage room. Consequently, no server available check on guests, refill drinks, get more condiments, bring the check, etc. Even the restaurant manager seemed to participate in this untimely stocking activity.
3 A request for tarter sauce for the shrimp, made when the food was delivered, was not fulfilled until after the entrée got cold.

I was happy to pay for the food. It was just as good as 50 years ago. But this case, to me, justified absolutely NO server tip. And, it makes me not want to plan a return visit to the restaurant. It is the restaurant’s loss of a repeat customer and word-of-mouth advertising, my loss of deliciously prepared food, and the server’s loss of additional income.

(Note to management: Good customer service is a 3-way win: restaurant, customer, employee. If you can’t utilize an employee training program to teach and practice good customer service, perhaps you could require your employees to pass by Chik-Fil-A every day on their way in. Perhaps some of it will be absorbed by osmosis.)

great old dive that has been a mainstay to of Monroe since before I was born. The waiters still wear the white jackets. The men's bathroom is still outside, which tells you how old the building is. They have stuffed shrimp , great gumbo and believe or not good pasta.

The seafood is always delicious and their house salad and dressing is very unique. Dined there for birthday and ordered my first steak ever from there and it was cooked to perfection! Not a fancy place at all but the food and drinks are divine! The waiters are very friendly.
