Lincoln Homestead State Park

Great place to visit. Kids will enjoy as well as adults. It is well maintained, staff is very friendly, beautiful location and only about an hour from Louisville, Lexington and Frankfort. There is also the Lincoln museum in the main part of town. This is where Abe's parents got married.

Stopped just for a time filler as we were driving through town. It was closed from September to May, so definitely wait till later to go. Walked around a bit and peeked in windows. It looked really neat. For 2.50 a person, you can tour inside. Will most likely go back when in the area again to do full tour.

We had a little extra time on our way to Maker's Mark distillery, so decided to stop at the Lincoln Homestead state park. You can take a guided tour - or just wander through the buildings yourself. Only $3/ person either way. Cabins are well restored and many period furnishings inside. Really worthwhile for anyone interested in Lincoln, early Kentucky or pioneer history. We were just going to "zip through", but the volunteer guide had so many interesting and informative stories that we spent over a half hour and would have stayed longer, but needed to get going or we would miss the last tour at Maker's Mark. it's only a slight "detour" through some very pretty scenery if you are heading to Maker's Mark on the 55 or 555. Plan about 25-30 minutes drive from here to Maker's Mark.

There is a replica of Thomas Lincoln's boyhood cabin built on the original site with some furniture he actually made. Also the original cabin Nancy Hanks lived in is there also although it has been moved a mile from its actual site. Add a memorial to Nancy Hanks and a small replica of a blacksmith's shop and that it the extent of the park. Not much time is needed to see it but for $2.50 it is a bargain nonetheless. Take in a few distilleries in the area or visit Perryville National Battlefield and you have a complete day.

There is a small fee to look at the houses. They are well preserved and interesting. The Park attendant gives you a little history lesson before you walk through the grounds. He let us know who built what furniture, etc. There is a summary sheet on the Lincoln lineage.

The visit took 1/2 hour. I wish they would have had a couple of souvenirs specific to the site, but they did not.
