“Memorable & quirky”

We booked a three night stay at Tawstock Castle as a birthday present for our Dad. There were seven of us ranging in ages from 13 to 70 and we all really enjoyed the experience.

The two ensuite bedrooms were very spacious and were decorated & furnished in a style that suited the surroundings. The two tower bedrooms are quite small and share a small shower room at the base of the tower. The living room was well furnished with three sofas, large & small dinning tables, flat screen TV & numerous DVDs and a log burning stove in the fireplace which was well stocked with logs to the side. There is an unusual display of 'art' in the glass cabinet which amused us. Teenagers enjoyed the fusball table & PS3. However there is no wifi in the property which was a bit annoying!

The property is in a fantastic location and really does have 360* views of North Devon. When we stayed there were lots of lambs in the field next to the private driveway. A word of caution if you plan to explore the area, if you turn right out of the castle gates to head south the road is extremly narrow as you come to a bridge although once through it widens out.

“Amazing but...”
Reviewed 19 April 2015 for a stay in April 2015

We have spent a weeks family holiday here and the castle is an amazing building with fantastic views and well placed to visit Devon and Cornwall.
Master bedroom and twin four poster bedrooms have fantastic ensuite facilities. Bedrooms with the turrets are less well serviced with ground floor shower room which is basic. We stayed with 6 adults and two children and it was comfortable but is starting to show signs of wear and tear and does need a good freshen up. This is not a budget holiday and some parts of the building and decor need to be improved, in particular top bedroom, ground floor shower room and lounge.
I think the experience would be enhanced if they offered a mid week clean and towels/bed change.
Overall a pleasant and certainly wow factor but upon closer inspection all is not as it appears for the money.
Would we stay here again? Yes but with fewer guests.

Management Response
27 Apr 2015
Thank you for taking the time to let us have your feedback following your recent stay. We are delighted to learn that you enjoyed Tawstock Castle. Thank you also for your constructive comments regarding the facilities and the general decor. It is a very popular property with us and as such is subject to a certain amount of wear and tear. The owners have been made aware of your comments and have already arranged for these remedial works to be carried out.
A mid-week clean can be carried out at the request of guests, however this is not currently included in the cost of the holiday. If, in the future, you do require an extra clean, please let us know so we can arrange this and advise costs.
We very much look forward to welcoming you back to a Rural Retreat soon.
Best wishes
Rupert Seager
