Description: David Kanai is a professionaly trained sushi chef, who also has an extensive Japenese menu as well. Fresh fish is flown in from the coast as well as Japan for some incredible delacies that we've never had the opportunity to try here in Wichita. He is wonderfully informative and builds your meal based on your taste and interests. Meaning if you're not into "raw fish" he will assist you in going through the wide variety of cooked options to find something that you'll love. Penny & Chris Ellis have opened a restaurant to showcase David's talents.

Kanai is small but worth the wait!

“Simply some of the best sushi anywhere!- not just "for Wichita"”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 February 2012

I travel the country for business and eat sushi regularly in cities on the west coast that you would expect to have good food. Kanai beats most of them hands down and holds its own against the finest (and most expensive) I've been to. Do not stick your nose in the air and say, "Sushi, in Wichita?". If you do, you'll be missing one of Wichita's dining gems.

“Wichita is fooling itself that this is how Sushi should be. Skip it.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 October 2011

I know the standards for sushi in Wichita are low, but Kanai - especially with local buzz - is a poor representation of what a Sushi joint should be.

My standard litmus test to compare sushi joints is an order of the little known but ubiquitous chirashi sushi ("scattered" in japanese, a chirashi is a bed of sushi rice with an assortment of sashimi presented on top) which allows an opportunity for the chef to show off garnish skills and fish selection. Kanai doesn't even offer a chirashi!

Menu includes the typical American illegitimate corruptions (if you can't tell, I'm a sushi purist) but after ordering some basic sushi fare I find that they do not do the basics particularly well. Nigiri and sashimi cuts are average. Rice is underseasoned, dry, and unsticky. Tamago is flavorless and dense. Garnishes and presentation are overly straightforward bordering on lame and negligent. Makes me think that the buzz is a result of silly "Volcano-Philly-Tempura-Futo-Spicy-Mayo" rolls that would mask the skill and freshness of even the best sushi chefs and ingredients - you know, the kind of thing someone who really doesn't like sushi would order.

Regardless, pricing is typical but unconnected to what you get. The service is typical for Wichita, underwhelming and at Kanai particularly under-educated about their product.

Never thought I'd recommend something like this but honestly, if you want sushi in Wichita, go to one of the Dillion's in a nice part of town during the lunch hour when the chef is at the counter. You can verify that something is fresh or even special order something a wait a few minutes. Little to no wait, no hassle, friendly personal service that knows what the ingredients are and where it came from. Most of the chefs produce excellent sushi rice! Price and portions are absolutely reasonable!

“Over rated.”

It took an hour and a half and my table of friends asking 3 different servers before we receive our cooked dish, by then we had finished our sushi. Menu is interesting and would have potential if the sushi didn't taste like it came from Dillions. Considering we waited 45 minutes to be seated, it was a time consuming annoying experience for mediocre sushi. Next time I crave sushi I'll stick with Sakura.

“The best I have found so far in Wichita”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 August 2011

Kanai is a very good sushi restaurant in Wichita. The staff is friendly and attentive. The food is fresh and the skill of the sushi chefs is very good. If I have one complaint it is that the rolls are too big! Maki should be bite size! Fish combos are a little questionable including putting sweet unagi on a rainbow roll. That's a no no.
Worth a visit for sure.
