My daughter and I were traveling across the country to take her back to college. We wanted to explore a bit of history in Iowa that we hadn't ever experienced. Classmates had recommended "The Amana Colonies", and it didn't disappoint. We really enjoyed the bucolic farming ambiance of the area, the "Americana" of the ice cream social that was about to start there at the Inn, the fields stretching out behind the Inn. (In fact, we had a great run there in the morning.)
Our room, "The Wild Rose", was nicely appointed for a B & B... clean, very comfortable and spacious, artistic and quaint.
My one big "caveat" is that the Inn is on the train tracks, and trains do come through. So, if you're a light sleeper (like me), be advised. Despite enjoying the whole area, I was glad to only have to do one night that close to active tracks.
The food was excellent and sumptuous at breakfast! (To the point that I asked for a recipe for their superb French Toast.)
I can't remember the name of the other little village near by where they sent us for dinner. However, it was truly darling with quaint 19th century architecture, and we ate very well there too.
I do recommend The Amana Colonies for a very pleasant and historic stop when traversing Iowa.
