Place doesn't look like much on the outside, even when you walk in the place looks like an old time bar. Looks can be deceiving. The old beer signs that line the walls bring back memories of the establishments my parents used to go to. Pretty good selection of beers on tap and in the bottle, an interesting menu of good old staple foods, good service. Reasonable prices, close to the much more expensive Court Avenue establishments

Not many dining/drinking establishments in Downtown Des Moines have their own parking lot. The one on the west side of El Bait Shop is small, but you can also use the adjacent gravel lot behind the Central Iowa Mechanical building after 4 PM & on weekends. So there's no excuse to skip this unique place for their beer selection & large food menu.

My wife & I received very good service from "Timmy Beans" during an early Tuesday night supper stop. He thoughtfully recommended my wife get the half-order of nachos, which was more than enough to satisfy her hunger. My 1/3-pound bacon burger with Swiss was cooked well done (there standard practice - good food safety practice), but was not overcooked & very tasty even for a prepared patty (from a local vendor). The only dining disappointment was my side of French fries, which must've been sitting for awhile after frying. But for the eclectic interior decor & the friendly staff & the huge selection of both beers and food items, we recommend a visit to El Bait Shop.

Been in town for a few days at a meeting and several of us stopped in for a meal. There is an awesome selection of beverages (beer on tap) and the menu is loaded with comfort food. I started with a round of deviled eggs and had the chicken pot pie. Others had the broasted chicken. Everything was good and the portions were more than ample. Our server was very knowledgeable about all the beers on tap and helped each of us make a selection.

The atmosphere is a little eclectic but fun for sure.

4 of us for lunch - had: broasted chicken, Ruben, tenderloin, and meatball sandwich. Everything excellent except the tenderloin- way over done and looked like frozen patty. Chicken was great. Wonderful menu options; 262 draft beers; great service ; very reasonable prices. Definitely will be back .
