Owner description: The only lighthouse museum in Indiana.

This is an excellent museum, full of area history. You can tour on your own, but there are people to explain things, that makes it a lot more interesting. Be sure to notice the chain link fence outside, where each link represents a person who drowned from a certain ship wreck, with signs that tell about it. The view from the lighthouse of the draw bridge, and the area around it is lovely. We also drove a short distance down the beach to walk out to the pier light, which we enjoyed very much!

Walk out to end and around the base of light house, when safe to do so. It is a nice walk a time of day. If waves, or ice are over concrete it not safe. Enjoy the fews. You can see Chicago's skyline if clear.

I visited the Old Lighthouse Museum las August. I had first visited the site back in the 1950's when it was abandoned, and we kids just went in, as nobody was around the the door was open . . . How times change. Now, it is a don't miss museum for both tourists and locals alike . . . and especially for locals who will learn a lot about Michigan City and its imporant history, way back from when Abe Lincolon stopped there.

The staff was very friendly and you could tell they were really proud of the museum and loved to talk about it. I don't like guided tours and they understood that and stayed near by, but close enough to answer the questions that I had. Wish it was in a prettier location, it was difficult to photograph.
