Beautifully preserved by the State of Indiana, the grand home of wealthy and generous James F.D. Lanier, is well worth a tour. The Docents are very knowledgeable and willing to share the story of Mr. Lanier and his rise to prominence. There are a few "family " pieces of furniture, but is very nicely appointed with period furnishings from the extensive Indiana State Museum collections. Lanier lured Maryland architect, Francis Costigan, to Madison to design his beautiful home. Costigan's hallmark is the detailed woodwork , curved doors and the inspiring spiral staircase. Plan on a full hour here for your guided tour...time well spent.

Our tour guide was interesting, very knowledgeable, he was able to answer any question that was asked. It was interesting to see how the wealthy people lived back in the day and the way they decorated.

I was looking online for an historic house to visit on the way home from Louisville. I googled historic house, southern Indiana and the Lanier Mansion came up so my sister and I stopped. We got there around 12 noon and were told the tour guide was at lunch and the next tour was at 1:00. We were driving to Chicago and didn't really have time to wait. The receptionist spoke to the site manager and he agreed to give us the tour. Wow! The house is shown as it would have been in the 1850's. The site manager obviously knew the house and the history of it's owner very well. Great tour! The town of Madison is quaint and I would revisit it.

This State Historical Site is in Madison Indiana off 2nd & Vine street. The Visitor's Center is across the street & you have to pay for your tour there.
It's $10 a person, seniors & children are less. A docent guides you through the house & you learn some Indiana history. The Lanier family was very important at the beginning of our statehood. This house showcases their wealth & importance.
We enjoyed our tour. The servant's quarters are under construction, but we were able to take a peek through the door. The gardens were disappointing. The lawn & shrubs are well kept, but a house like this needs a fabulous garden. Sadly, not many flowers.
Apparently, they have concerts on the back lawn.
If you're in the area, stop in!
