This was a nice tour and a beautiful preserved building. It has remained in pristine shape forever. We purchased tickets at the visitor center across the street, $10 for adults, $5 for under 17 yr. We received almost a private tour. My family and one other couple. Very knowledgeable guide. He took his time and answered all our questions. My advice is to stop here and take the tour. You will learn so much about Lanier and what he did for Indiana, it is quite startling. The house is nice size and the tour takes about 40 minutes and I think well worth it. You will learn about the area with is surprising as well. A very nice stop.

We had one day to spend in Madison over a weekend. We elected to tour the Lanier Mansion during the afternoon heat. It was a welcome relief to be admitted quickly to the historic home. We started in the front entrance and wound our way through the downstairs rooms and then up to the second and third floors. The tour focuses on the Lanier family, and how they earned their fortune as well as their contributions to the state of Indiana. Mr. Lanier's wealth for the time period is equally impressive. The architecture and the furnishings of the house are superbly re-created based on records and photographs, however the original frame of the house is in great condition. Some of the interesting facts we learned are that in the Victorian period, the vegetable celery was a sign of wealth. It was served in special celery vases at the dining table. I especially enjoyed the spiral staircase, as well as the details around the house's ventilation and access to the gutters for cleaning. Tip: Buy your ticket across the street at the Visitor Center and select one of the convenient tour times. You will need to save your receipt as it serves as your ticket to the tour.

I have been here years ago during The Nights Before Christmas event. However, the in depth tour about the house and owner exceeded expectations. Our docent was friendly and knowledgeable. Considering this was a large group the tour was handled very well and went just about an hour in length. The house is truly a gem not to be missed. In fact, much of the architecture here is a feast for one's eyes. Don't forget to check out the view from the back- a breathtaking view of the river. It's $10 for adults but only $8 for seniors.
