As with most roadside oddities, this is less impressive in person but it’s still pretty cool, especially if you have younger kids. You can buy a token across the street at the liquor store and for $1 you get about 10 seconds of fire. The tokens are also nice souvenirs. Worth a stop, especially at dusk or dark to get the full flame effect.

Adorable and silly, and a must see if here in town, and frankly, the second best thing in the area (Holiday Inn nearby came in first). I'd recommend just taking photos or, if you must, grabbing the token and watching the dragon breathe fire at the cute little knight.

Recommended.

Thank you, TripAdvisor!! Grandma scored big with this attraction. It doesn't take long, it's not all the money in the world and the kids love it.

Water tower nearby is also a good photo opp. The dragon was neat, but the fire didn't last long. We had to buy the $1 coin from the liquor store across the street, and some may be opposed to going in there. Overall it was a neat 1 time thing to do. I don't know that I'd make a special trip to go back and see it. I think for me it's a 1 and done.

This is absolutely the very best token-operated propane-powered steel fire-breathing dragon I've ever seen.

I wouldn't say it's worth leaving I70 just to see it, but if you're in Vandalia for any other reason (motel, in our case) then, yes. Note: it's right across from a curious establishment called "Vandal Wash" which combines a laundromat, PET wash, and car wash, which could be a reason to stop. The dragon actually promotes the nearby hardware store, Kaskaskia Supply (True-Value franchise). I happened to be on laundry duty so it was my wife who went to the hardware store, which she said was very good. I don't know exactly what their policy is on tokens--my wife was in their to buy a couple of cylinders of camp-stove propane and they offered her the tokens for free.

It looks pretty safe. Nobody watching from the ground is in danger of being incinerated. Saint George is bright, shiny, and free from burn marks.

We had to stop at the hardware store to get tokens so we could see the dragon breathe fire! The hardware store was great, by the way. Glad we stopped.

A home-built huge dragon, come at dusk or after dark to see him breathe fire! Buy $1 tokens at the liquor store across the street. A must-see when you're in Vandalia.

Right off of Interstate 70 in Vandalia. Very cool metal sculptures that are delightfully done. Great 5-10 minute stop for you and the kids

We added this little stop to the trip for entertainment value. The kids are still talking about it. The hardware store next door gave us tokens and a little card for the kids. Please patron that store!! They were wonderful. The dragon breathes fire. Don't expect something grand, but if you want fun little stops on a long journey, this is a great one.
