Although this is just 9 miles from home, tonight was the first time here. We both had the Thursday night specials. I had the liver and onions, spouse had the breaded tenderloin...with 2 sides and rolls for $5.50 each. Bottles of select beers are $1 everyday. Definitely going back, good food in a quaint atmosphere.

There were 27 of us in our group, our organization had our dinner meeting here. We probably made the regulars nervous but we were served our food - everyone ordered very different plates - all at about the same time. While waiting we had our quick business meeting. Worked out great. I had the Chef Salad, served in a huge wooden bowl. Mom had taco salad (daily special $2 cheaper) and Dad had philly cheesesteak and substituted potato salad for fries. All delicious but typical normal small town gas station eats. Nothing terribly special about the meals except we didn't have to prepare them ourselves, which of course is still worth something. We'll be back happily when our group meets here again in the future. But that tiny ladies restroom stall! What is up with that? You have to be a lilliputian to fit!

We are glad you enjoyed your meal that evening...and we hope you enjoyed your visit to The Strand after you left Funderburk's! It is amazing what they are doing to restore the building.
PS -- agree about the lady's room stall. This is the "mom" of the "Mom & Pop" of Funderburk's...obviously there was a design flaw somewhere along the line! The other stall definitely gets more use!

WE stopped in this small town, and ate lunch at this little local dive. The restaurant looks like a Seven Eleven that they cleared the shop out of half of the interior and set up tables and chairs, and added a small strip kitchen to the back. The clientele was very much local country folk - one man and his son came in and the waitress didn't bother to give them menus, but asked what they wanted today. The special the day we went in was chicken livers or chicken gizzards, which we did not choose to order. I had a hamburger, which was very good despite its appearance. The bun looked like it was hand torn out of a pan of bread, and the meat was also an unusual shape (they did not match), but the hamburger tasted very good, and was not greasy. The fries were probably out of a commercial bag (frozen), but they tasted OK and were generous. The price was decent. Overall we were pleased and considered ourselves entertained. So if you are a little adventurous, I recommend this restaurant, but if you are the McDonald's type, I would steer clear.

Incidentally, there was a sign (among many) over the kitchen saying "Never trust a skinny cook". Based on this criteria, the cook was very trustworthy.

We always say we just “look like a gas station” as our primary business is our restaurant. The building was actually designed for the diner with a small convenience store and fueling. Often folks expect to find only roller grills and chain/fast food type offerings in a “gas station” but we actually offer a full service restaurant with a full menu. We are locally owned…still a “Mom&Pop” (and this is the “Mom”)!

Our buns are baked fresh every morning (so yes, your hamburger bun probably was torn out of a pan of buns) and the burgers are hand pattied. We are glad you enjoyed it!

Safe travels to you!

$6.50 bought the daily special which was Alaskan whitefish done with a cornmeal coating. Crisp and yummy. Two sides came with it. Not much charm to the restaurant but hey, it's a small town dinerdiner.

We are glad you enjoyed our fish. It's a popular item at Funderburk's! And, yes, we are definitely a small town diner...the definition of a "Mom & Pop." Thanks so much for your review!
