An amazing part of my journey through Laos. Vieng Xai is a tiny village with a grand history. Take the audio tour of the caves, eat at the local Indian (the only) restaurant- all the food is made super fresh so it takes time, and see the town. Although you will only need a day here, it is so worth it.

It is a fair climb up to the cave by concrete steps curving up the hillside. The cave contains sad little cairns. You should take a strong torch if you want to explore deeper. I didn't but didn't fancy it anyway! The museum at the base is worth visiting before and indeed after your visit. If you see lots of tiny pin holes in the sand in front of the cave this is made by an insect which looks like a sandy coloured tick and can only move backwards!

This is one of the best examples of why the americans were defeated in the fight against Communism. The caves were a refuge to thousands during the horrific 9 year bombing campaign in the US secret war against the Pathet Lao and communism in general. The brilliant audioguide is very clear in its facts and it was a very sobering experience. We are very glad we made the 2 day journey over to Vieng Xai as it was well worth it. We really enjoyed staying in Vieng Xai rather than Sam Neua as it is a lovely town in a beautiful setting. The locals aren't so used to westerners so seemed friendlier than anywhere else we have been in Laos. Nashi 2 is rather run down but OK for an overnight stay. We ate breakfast and lunch at a nice family restaurant nearly opposite Nashi 1.We think it was called Sawfen.

Visiting these caves was the highlight of our trip to Laos. Tours start at 9am and 1pm with an English-speaking local guide and the best audio guide I've ever used. The caves were occupied by about 20,000 people for 9 years during the Vietnam War, and the numerous clips (translated) of locals describing their experiences were sobering; background sounds of planes overhead brought to life the reality of how it must have been during that time. The difficulty of reaching Vieng Xai means there are very few visitors, but it truly was worth the effort. Highly recommended!
