This is one of the best examples of why the americans were defeated in the fight against Communism. The caves were a refuge to thousands during the horrific 9 year bombing campaign in the US secret war against the Pathet Lao and communism in general. The brilliant audioguide is very clear in its facts and it was a very sobering experience. We are very glad we made the 2 day journey over to Vieng Xai as it was well worth it. We really enjoyed staying in Vieng Xai rather than Sam Neua as it is a lovely town in a beautiful setting. The locals aren't so used to westerners so seemed friendlier than anywhere else we have been in Laos. Nashi 2 is rather run down but OK for an overnight stay. We ate breakfast and lunch at a nice family restaurant nearly opposite Nashi 1.We think it was called Sawfen.

Visiting these caves was the highlight of our trip to Laos. Tours start at 9am and 1pm with an English-speaking local guide and the best audio guide I've ever used. The caves were occupied by about 20,000 people for 9 years during the Vietnam War, and the numerous clips (translated) of locals describing their experiences were sobering; background sounds of planes overhead brought to life the reality of how it must have been during that time. The difficulty of reaching Vieng Xai means there are very few visitors, but it truly was worth the effort. Highly recommended!

Where the Pathet Lao leadership hid during the Second Indochina War (American Vietnam War). Way off the Tourist Trail (it IS remote!).

Getting there - we stayed in Xam Neua and hired a taxi for the day to take us there, stay with us (you need transport between the caves whether it is bike, motorbike or motorised vehicle) and take us back - Kip300k arranged at the Xam Neua tourist office.
The tour itself is so informative. I can't honestly say the guide added much other than to unlock the caves but the audio tour is excellent. Historical fact and detail but also interviews with those who were there and impacted on events. Far and away the most professional thing we have encountered in Laos.
The audio tours go at 9am and 1pm. An 8am departure from Xam Neua will get you there by around 8.40 so plenty of time - it is 28km of very twisty roads!
If you are at all interested in the secret American War and the founding fathers of Laos as a Republic this is a must do.

totaally worth the trip to arrive to vieng xay which is mot easy. there are guided tours at 9 am and 1 pm. we took our own motorbike but you can rent a bike there, this way more caves can be seen. the audioguided tour is great and they did a great job with historical context. Is not easy to arrive to vieng xay unless you take a taxi, but here are some tips:
- rent a motor bike in sam neua - not easy to find one, ask on the restaurant Dan Nao, close to bounhome guesthouse
- take the public bus at 9,45 am in the souther station in sam neua. to go back from vieng xai ask for help in the caves, the guides will let you know how to catch the bus comming from vietnam
