What a spectacular location for 19 of our family to come together under the sun (and occasional dramatic thunderstorms) with the stunning backdrop of Mount Etna on one side with it's plumes of smoke and wreathes of cloud and on the other the warm seas all framed by beautiful tropical trees.
We were welcomed by our wonderful hosts Esmeralda and Guiseppe who were so helpful, accommodating and hospitable - we were made to feel incredibly welcome from start to finish with nothing being too much trouble. We rented all 4 properties and gathered round the vast pool daily, eating in the main house together most evenings. On one evening we arranged through our hosts for a chef to come and cook a fantastic Sicilian seafood feast for us and sat under the lime trees as dish after dish was served by Chef Mario and his team (and cleared away!).
We climbed Mount Etna on one day, enjoyed the scree-running style descent, had a boat trip along the Riviera dei Ciclopi on another, visited the stunning hilltop town of Taormina 40 minutes away and also Gole della Alcantara and swam in the cool river running through its volcanic gorge.
There's a number of small villages/towns within 15-20 minutes drive where you can shop in small to medium sized supermarkets, fruit shops, bakeries and butchers. The nearest is Postillo, about 5 minutes drive (but not walkable) with an icecream parlour/bakery/bar (Patane' F.Lli Giuseppe E Francesco), small but good grocery store (La Bottega del Risparmio), fruit shop, butchers, bakery but the most useful for us was town was Riposto, 15 minutes drive away with a decent range of restaurants, supermarkets, a seafront/harbour, fish market, fruit stalls. Large wood-fired pizzas at Pizzeria Grano. A great icecream parlour, (Al Bocconcino) which also has an excellent takeaway icecream option. The Pistachio was out of this world. You'll have to travel further for the beautiful, better preserved towns of Sicily, such as Taormina for fancier restaruants, cafe's shops and views.
The accommodation is excellent - ranging from modern and well appointed to charming & rustic all set in incredible grounds with fresh citrus fruit and a range of garden produce freely available for your use - tomatoes, aubergines, chilies, basil, lemon & lime. The access to the sea with its own jetty made for a great alternative to the fabulous pool.
Highly recommended for large group or family holidays. You'll need a car to make the most of what this side of Sicily has to offer, but if you only ever venture out to get your supplies and confine yourself to this wonderful place fro the whole holiday, you'll be delighted you chose to stay here.
