Owner description: This Italianate-style brick house, with original furnishings, looks very much as it did in 1865 when a group of townspeople presented it as a gift to Ulysses S. Grant on his victorious return from the Civil War.

The only problem we had was the sign on the front door was a bit confusing

Although the grounds and dwellings were not huge or numerous, the 1/2 hour tour of Grant's Home and the small building next door with other information about presidents was fascinating and entertaining. Just enough visual and verbal information to not overload but to just absorb all the interesting information about this under-recognized historical spot. The tour narrator obviously enjoyed her job and engaged our group with many facts and addressed questions readily. A pleasant surprise in this fascinating little town!

everyone should stop here and take in all the rich history. It was on donation only and the volunteer tour guides were super informative and friendly.

You can't miss Grant's home when you're in Galena! This Italianate mansion perches above the city, and looks really far from the river. it's really not, and it's worth the hike if you have any interest in 19th century homes & history. The tour guides are very knowledgeable, and very enthusiastic about their subject. The home is incredibly well-preserved, with ALL original furniture and a very authentic feel. We particularly enjoyed the whimsey and curiosities presented by the current "Presidents & their Pets" display.
