“Centrally located hotel in The Loop”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 April 2012

The Palomar is a boutique hotel located on State Street in the Loop. The hotel has a very small lobby with friendly and efficient front desk staff. Though if there are a few people checking in it at the same time the lobby gets crowded and chaotic with no clear place for people to queue during the check in process. In fact the lobby is so small that a few people waiting in the front desk area will also be blocking traffic from the elevators.

The decor is contemporary and clean without overpowering. The colors are a little on the dark side with a generally brown / earth tone pallette to the decor. The hallways are quiet and somewhat dimly lit, but do not feel unsafe.

The room was small but sufficient with a king bed and and an integrated bureau/wall unit with a nice flat screen tv mounted in it and deocrative vases on either side with accent lighting that was a nice touch. There is a nice plug station on the desk area to allow charging of various devices and decent lighting. The bed was very comfrortable with a supportive mattress and nice linens. The bathroom has a sliding door with a full length mirror and interesting kohler fixtures in the sink and bathtub (except for the showerhead, which was generic). Water pressure was good, and bath products were very nice.

Room service menu was interesting and reasonably priced, though the service ends at 11pm.

Overall a very pleasant experience for a short business trip.

Room Tip: Try the truffle popcorn from the room service menu

My wife and I spent a week at the Hotel Palomar in early March. Conveniently located in downtown Chicago in the River North area - minutes away from the Magnificent Mile and major attractions.
Hotel staff is courteous and welcoming. Rooms are spacious, impeccably clean and the daily wine reception from 5-6 pm (including pizza appetizers) in the lobby area is a real treat!
For light sleepers, the surrounding area can get a little rowdy on Friday/Saturday nights - lots of clubs and bars bringing in a college crowd.
This hotel deserves all the accolades it receives!

Room Tip: Higher floor recommended.

This was my first stay at a Kimpton hotel and the Palomar did not disappoint. I've stayed in a number of excellent Chicago hotels - Peninsula, Four Seasons, Sofitel, Omni, and more - and the Palomar is truly a great find. I was in town on business and had a two night stay. The rooms are big, thoughtfully designed and furnished, exceptionally clean and quiet. They even had a multi-plug portal on the desk. Duh! The bathroom alone is worth the stay - mine had a big shower (although the water pressure was non-existent) and a jacuzzi tub for two which was perfect after a long run. Gotta love the animal print robes too. Really, the robes are emblematic of Kimpton's effort to separate itself from the more sterile big chains. You sense it in genuinely warm and friendly service and a long list of nice little special touches, like a wine reception in the cozy lobby every evening. Palomar has a great fitness center (a biggie for me) and a really nice pool (didn't try it but it looked great). I only experienced the restaurant for appetizers and then breakfast one morning. Both were quite good, not amazing, but good. The bar is a scene and seemed to be packed late into the evening.

You absolutely need to join their frequent guest program as it gives you free internet, a free mini-bar raid, and the chance at a room upgrade. It's free. Why not?

Overall, I'd put this hotel up among the best. Definitely a notch below The Peninsula et al, but well above the norm. And in a city with as many great hotels as Chicago, that's saying a lot.

Room Tip: They'll send you an email with a low cost upgrade option before your trip. You don't always...

For the price......its a very good idea. Though the rooms are a tad smaller, perhaps, but the service is exceptional. From Patrick the bellman, to the reception, happy hour....its top-knotch, old school friendly. Kids get bathrobes, a goldfish in the room, a treasure hunt. The pool is only 3 1/2 feet deep, and not very big, but quite the view. Location, very good.
