The pieces on display are like walking through the pages of an art history text book. Had a great visit but be aware that American Gothic is on loan to another museum on April 3.

Their are parts of the place where you can be alone and there are spots you cannot.

Enjoyed the time here. You need at least 4 hours to fully appreciate all there is to see here. The Rodin and Degas exhibits were very good. Contemporary - Modern art leaves me cold, but the building is very beautiful too.

Simply amazing with a variety of offerings and exhibits that run the gamut and will keep the interest of all people, even kids. The entry fee is a bit high, but the many different exhibits, from different art - to Medieval Art and Armor/Weapons to religious (very old) exhibits. There was also a photography display on the Lower Level that was excellent. Finally, I would strongly recommend that you plan to spend several to 4 hours to really see everything - even just casually walking through the Art Institute.

The Art Institute is by far one of the best art museums in the united states. There are so many masterpieces in one building that I can't even begin to describe. My personal favorite was the modern art museum - plenty of Pollock's, Warhol's, and Lichtenstein to name a few. They have works from every major artist that you can think of. Plan to stay a few hours if you want to see everything.

Visited the museum with two kids (12 and 9). We went to the Family Center first, so they could complete an activity which would lead them on a search for various art pieces throughout the museum (and keep them entertained). Near the family center was an interactive exhibit room with helium filled fish balloons that you could play with. The kids found this entertaining. As a family, we enjoyed the miniature rooms (basement), the Impressionist galleries, and the arms and armor exhibits. Several areas throughout the museum were under construction and draped off. The map in the visitors guide was confusing and difficult to follow - maybe because of the construction areas - but it was hard to navigate. Admission for children is free.
