We tried two times before a successful third attempt to go up into the tower. The first two times (first- late morning, second-6pm-ish), the wait was 2.5-3 hours. We came the next morning and arrived about 20 minutes before the skydeck opened. PERFECT. Got in with the first group and saw the amazing sights!

I would rate this higher (pardon the pun) except for the crowds and crowds and crowds.

We visited Willis Tower on President's Weekend, Saturday morning, so there were more people in Chicago than normal that weekend. We got there right before the 10am opening time, and got right in, but ended up downstairs in the ticket booth line. It moved quickly though. Alot of hurry up and wait because then you wait to see a short movie about the contruction, which was interesting even for the kids (9 and 13 yr old). Express elevators weren't working so had to take freight elevators, but still a quick trip to the top. Views are amazing but don't pay the money if it isn't a clear day because it will be a waste. The new glass viewing boxes that extend from the building were the kids' favorite feature and made for fantastic pictures. The line to go back down took forever - took us about 45 minutes to get back down, and this was before lunch. The parking garage across the street was convenient but cost $30 for over two hours. So, cool to see and worth it, but very costly and time-consuming.

With every tall structure, the wait time is notorious. This definitely applies to the Sears Tower, now know as the Willis Tower. Initially, we would have waited 3 hours just to get tickets. We were lucky enough to have made it early on our second day in Chicago. We got inline around 10am, buying the ticket was a breeze, stood in line for 15minutes to watch a short video on the buidling's history (which is very informative and useful -- better than reading or listening to a recording device), rode 3 separate elevator to take you to the top..whew.

It was a clear day so, we could see the buidlings and the ocean. The best part was the ledge wiith clear glass. It really feels like you are stepping outside of the building, suspended in the air! Our iPhone cameras didn't fare well as it turned out too dark. Good thing my friend had a DSLR. You need flash to ger the photo to come out perfectly. If not, the 4th ledge has a kiosk where the same camera is mounted at a certain angle and it'll give you the best photo you'll have yet.

Apart from the long lines, a trip to Chicago is not complete without a photo op here.

After being up the John Hancock Tower I was expecting something similar but I found this experience was more about throughput than quality. As much as the glass box is great and you can get good photos looking down, John Hancock has better views of Chicago as a whole and you don't feel like all they wanted was your money like you do here.
