We have been to Joe's Bar several times, and had great food and great service from day one. When you go, make sure you are hungry!!! Portions are huge, and the crisps are to die for. Anything at all was done to accomodate our wishes, and we were served food not even on their menue upon request . Make sure to order the garlic bread. The best we had we had so far. A big Thank You to the Staff!

We visited in December and sat in thin garden, had a jug of Sangria (best we had on the island) and dinner (delicious). Worth a visit for anyone in the area.

Well here we go...

We have never spent more time figuring out which restaurant to go to as that time when we decided to go to Jardim Do Mar. The two main contestants were Joe's Bar and Portinho, relatively no.1 and no.2 of the 4 restaurants in Jardim do Mar, according to Tripadvisor. Both had 4 out of 5 stars. Joe's Bar had an excellent steady curve (increasing number of reviews on an increasing number of stars) and less one star reviews, but it Portinho seemed more authentic with better view over the sea.

We read almost all the reviews of both restaurants, the good and the bad ones, and afterwards we couldn't really pick a winner. So we decided to just drive up there and pick on the spot.

In the car on the way up there all the reviews passed our mental eye and trying to decide which one would be the crown on the cake of our visit to Jardim do Mar was a very tough cherry to pick.

The village of Jardim do Mar was very cosy and the town square was beautifully lit with people hanging out and doing their thing. But that's not the issue here. You are reading this review to decide whether you want to do to Joe's Bar or Portinho, right? Right.

Well, when we arrived in Jardim do Mar the parking space was right in the beginning of the village so we decided to take the nearest restaurant. We knew that Portinho had a better view than Joe's Bar, but it was December, and it was dark so there wasn't much use for a view and we chose the option of the garden with its lights as depicted on the photo's of the reviews of Joe's Bar on Tripadvisor.

The stroll up to the restaurant was nice. Cute little streets with the alley names written in stones.

When we came to Joe's Bar the charismatic Bar was nowhere to be found. I mean Joe's Bar was there, it just wasn't charismatic. Joe was a little aloof, not unfriendly, but not what we expected through the reviews. The garden was ok, the lights were there and there was a fluffy cat coming to our table and meowing for attention and food. The cat was friendly and soft.

The food however was also less than we expected. We had swordfish with fries and salad. The swordfish was a bit... how do you put it, too well cooked? Sompy would be a good description, if it were a real word. Some of the fries were, so it seemed, not well cooked enough and soaked in vinegar (although now I realize that this might be a cultural thing, seeing that the British do this more often). For desert we had the chocolate mousse, which seemed to have been made from cocoa powder instead of real cocoa. The drink that we had (strawberry juice and orange juice) were really nice, this has to be mentioned.

Afterwards we paid Joe, greeted the cat and walked off to the carpark a little disappointed. Rethinking our decision process and trying to come up with ways to improve this we got in our car and drove to our next adventure...

...to be continued.

Very nice place. Definitely tourist place, locals would most probably come just for the drinks and watch the football inside. The garden is nice but also inside it's some nice interier.

Service was fast and nice. Big portion, the espada fish was served with rice and salade for 11euro..bit pricey for Madeira. But really well cooked. I took just a salade and sandwich. The salade was fresh.

To be improved: the menu doesn't look good.and it's a bit weirdly organized..like first you have some meals...and after portions...?! So we see that we could eat this beef pieces on stick...but didn't really notice first.

Anyways I would come again here.Great place! Thanks!
