Are the people of County Durham the friendliest in the world? Start off by going into Stanhope (take the "high road" shortcut for the views and the rabbits). Buy local lamb and veg in the proper butchers and greengrocers, but leave plenty of time for a chat - this is not a place to hurry. We were a multi-generation party of 10 celebrating a birthday over a summer weekend. The Old Miners Hall was everything we wanted and more. It really does sleep 10, no sofabeds, just big comfortable rooms with views and great beds.
Downstairs the sitting room and kitchen encourage you to relax - group cooking, board games (yes really),hide 'n seek, dad dancing, and long slow meals around the big refectory table. Its like Christmas without the squabbles. Just go.
We stayed here to celebrate our friends anniversary, from the moment you pull into rookhope it is amazing!
Walking through the big doors we were greeted by the owner who had made us up a lovely hamper which was a nice surprise for us.
There has been a lot of effort put into this place as it is stunning from the groundfloor up, sofas where lovely, beds were immaculate. The kitchen was amazing it honestly blew our minds. on the night time we spent it in the hot tub relaxing and during the day it was so sunny we had to turn it down.
Wear dale is beautiful but this place is mind blowing, we will be back with the whole family again
