We’ve never considered Far North Queensland as a destination for a family holiday because we’d been put off by those expensive, dated-sounding resorts in Port Douglas. So, we’ve been going to Bali every few years, renting different villas and loving it.
This time we were looking for a less expensive trip, and while exploring Sunshine Coast options stumbled on Spice at Oak, a thousand or so miles further up the coast. And we’re so glad we did.
First, the house. It’s new, and it’s stunning. There were wows all round from the moment we walked in through the antique Indian front gates of this generous, stylish building. It really is right on the beach and we were mesmerised by the sound of the waves gently washing, day and night.
It was only after a couple of days, padding around in bare feet on wood and tiled floors, that I realised why this building felt so familiar. It’s reminiscent of those wonderful big luxury Balinese villas, Asian stylish, huge rooms, deep seats, outdoor bathrooms, shutters and fans. There are even geckoes on the walls.
It’s in a magnificent setting; Oak beach is secluded. The coast is beautiful; the ocean’s a beautiful milky aquamarine. And we loved the landscape with its steep jungly hills and the bright green cane fields on the flats.
We did learn a few lessons which we’ll remember for next time.
First, food. The kitchen’s very well equipped, with great appliances and we made good use of it. It’s true that there are one or two nice places in Port Douglas but driving there feels like a bit of a drag if you end up going every day. So, on the next trip we’ll plan our meals better and make even more use of the kitchen, so we can maximise our time in the house.
Next, wine. Next time, we’ll pop into Dan Murphy’s on the way out of Cairns, where there’s hopefully a better selection than the local places we tried, and stock up there.
Last, we’ll avoid the tourism stuff. We did a kayak trip one day, and three hours listening to the guide’s climate-denial/xenophobia diatribe was quite enough. We were so glad to get back to our dreamy tropical house and to our slow routine of swimming, cooking, eating and drinking, reading and sleeping, all to the sound of those lapping waves.
We’ll be back to this wonderful house. Every year, we’re hoping.
This is an awesome house with a very high spec of finishes. From the moment you step through the wooden door into the courtyard you escape into a lush balinese style luxury. Everything in the house opens up creating lovely beach breezes and views from everywhere, the bathrooms are large and spacious with stone floors, all the rooms have mosquito screens and we fell asleep to the sounds of the waves. Oak beach itself is small and tranquil (can't swim there, due to crocs) but a 10 minute drive to Port Douglas with it's cafes, shops and restaurants. Really can't recommend this house enough, we didn't want to leave!

This beautiful condo is absolutely bespoke with the structures imported from quality materials all over the world - amazing design detail with a billion dollar beach vista backdrop. The walls seem to breath peace and tranquility.
Just heaven on Earth - we aim to be back! Just Wow.
Spice at Oak Beach was an amazing rental home situated on a beautiful secluded sandy beach. Our 3 sons enjoyed hours in the pool and exploring and playing football on the beach. The home was equipped with pool toys and a rugby ball. Arriving late from Canada we were thrilled we had made use of the grocery delivery service recommended by the very helpful Luxury Holidays representative.
The grocery store, reef tour port, shopping and restaurants were a quick drive into Port Douglas.
The home’s design, hardwoods, stone, unique metal finishings, concrete counters, appliances and decor throughout was all beautiful together yet still very functional.
The sunrise, ocean views and breezes were absolutely incredible.
Arrival instructions were clear and helpful. Everything was just as described.
Best vacation and vacation home ever!
