Owner description: Do you see yourself looking over the vast Serengeti plains, searching the horizon for a glimpse of a pride of Lions, or a Leopard lounging in the trees? Do you imagine yourself in India, riding an elephant through the high grass with your eyes peeled for the elusive Tiger? Have you ever thought how great it would be to hike through the rainforest, listening to the tropical birds, ever on the lookout for a Leopard or an Ocelot high in the canopy? Have you ever been to the zoo and wanted to be closer to the exotic cats; so close you could almost touch them? You don't have to spend tens of thousands of dollars to make these dreams come true. The world's largest accredited big cat rescue facility is right here in Tampa, Florida at Big Cat Rescue.

We arrived at the Big Cat Rescue and were welcomed into the area where there was a gift shop, videos of what goes on there and prepared for our tour. On the tour, as you see different cats, you get their story of where the cat came from, what happened and how the cat is healthy and as close to their natural habitats as possible. You then can listen to a recorded story about the cats journey to the rescue compound. Most stories will break your heart. There are 3 cats in the “witness protection program” in other words, they have been placed with the rescue program until their trial or legal situation is cleared in court. They cannot know where the cat came from, what was done to the cat, or what the cat may have done. The employees and interns of the compound live nearby and become very involed with the cats. It is truly a lovely place for these cats to have as a refuge. You learn a lot. You get pretty close. And, you understand how essential it is to protect these animals.

Our visit to the Big Cat Rescue facility was a wonderful educational and informational experience. Our volunteer guide, Jennie, was personable, clear, and added many stories about the various big cats on the property - in addition to what was on the recordings we heard. The only glitch was the failure of the recording machine to work initially, but Jennie and the other volunteers quickly had that rectified. I was impressed by the organization and the efforts being made by this sanctuary. Thank you for caring about these rescued animals, and for helping to work towards resolving the issues for future generations of big cats!

This was a great experience to see big cats up close in a “natural habitat “. The tour guide geared her presentation for the kids who had many questions and selected the cats they wanted to sponsor. This was their 2nd visit & most likely not their last. We all left with souvenirs that help support the care and feeding of the cats.

The tour was excellent. Big Cat rescue has evolved over its many years in existence. They are not shy in admitting mistakes they have made in the past (E.g breeding rescued big cats, which they have now stopped). They have a great intern program and all the guides are very knowledgable and passionate about Big Cats. It was sad to hear how many of these cats lived before making it to Big Cat Rescue but it was nice to see the love and support they get now.
Please consider supporting this great organization by visiting their Rescue
