“To Know it is To Love It”
Reviewed 24 April 2012

To truly appreciate The Mariner, you need to understand the type of vacation rental this is. Many of the people who stay here are long standing timeshare owners that come every year. If you rent, you are most likely going to be asked to rent from Saturday - Saturday, although other options are available when they aren't fully booked for the week. But, it is not a hotel or a resort, it is more like renting an apartment for the week right on the beach. The location was significantly renovated in 2009/2010 and that is a big plus when you compare to other locations in the area. It is right on a lovely, quiet section of St. Pete Beach with an outdoor partially shaded deck with chairs facing the gulf. The gulf is an excellent place to bring younger children since it is crystal clear and never that rough. The larger hotels, beach activities and a number of shops and restaurants are in walking distance. A handful of the rooms also face the gulf, and if you can afford/score one of those, it is a great way to go. The rooms are located around the pool with a courtyard on the other side with a shuffleboard court. There are two hot tubs, barbecues and picnic tables for use. The rooms all have a sitting room with a pull out sofa and table, a full kitchen with marble countertops, microwave, stove, etc., and 1 – 2 bedrooms/bathrooms. A number have decks or balconies facing the pool or the gulf (look at the property map on the website). It is a family place that will be a little noisy by the pool during certain hours (mainly after the kids come off of the beach) and rather quiet at night. The Bon Aire next door has a wonderful pool bar with amazing drinks, burgers, chicken sandwiches, shish kabobs, etc. This is the kind of place you bring your kids year after year to create memories, but can still thoroughly enjoy as an adult.

We were one of three families that stayed on St. Pete Beach over our spring breaks. Out of the three other families, ours was the nicest, roomiest and overall had more upgrades. We had six people in a two bedroom, two bath suite (with sofa bed). We had plenty of room during the day ( when sofa bed was put up) to move around. The kitchen was perfectly adequate for our usage. We ate breakfast and lunch at the lodgings and ate out for dinner. We weren't there to cook huge meals and the grab and go to the beach lifestyle was perfect for the week!

It was very clean, except for the sand we drug in during the day! We exchanged towels on Wednesday, which was very nice! The whole property is very clean and Michael, the maintenance man worked very hard to keep it that way. Anything we needed he helped us with right away!

The property sits right on St. Pete Beach. It was so nice to be able to send the kids to the beach or pool and know they didn't have to cross a busy road. We also enjoyed the easy access off the beach. We just grabbed our beach chairs and walked out of the gates!

We were able to trade into the Mariner Beach Club by depositing a studio lock off from the Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort, which had a TPU value of 21 for a two bedroom at the Mariner Beach Club for 19 TPUs to extend a vacation to Florida to include the Gulf Coast prior to visiting the East Coast.

The resort is really a converted motel and it feels exactly like that. Access to each of the units open up to a long walkway. Our unit did not have a private balconies nor private outside sitting area off your unit. Some of the units on the second floor had balconies which overlooked the pool. The units were recently remodeled but our unit still had old ceiling fans that had to be operated by pulling the cord as well as the light, no switch on the wall and no dimmers on any of the lights. This would not have been a huge problem if the rooms were spacious but since the rooms are so tight and cluttered with furniture that any light you turned on felt like the sun was at high noon.

The living room, kitchen and dinning room were all located in a very tight area. We actually had to move the TV stand to accommodate easier access to the two bedrooms. Each of the TV's were old and were of the huge console type. In these tight quarters, these TV's should have been replaced with LCD flat panel TVs to save space during the renovation. Also, the kitchen was very tight, if you opened either the refrigerator or dishwasher you were stuck there until they were closed. There was a round table with three chairs and three barstools. However, if you were to actually sit at the table or bar then no one would be able to move around you while seated at the furniture.

The two bedrooms are set up with the master having a king bed and the second room with two single beds. The master bed is very firm and not the most comfortable. There are two full bathrooms but they are very small and very tight. The master bathroom has an old porcelain tub and the second bathroom is behind the kitchen with a shower. They both use shower curtains instead of glass doors.

Overall some of the renovations were nice with granite countertops, some new light fixtures but mixed in with the old accordion closet doors and reused pocket doors, but more space could have been better utilized. The outside of the building looks nice with a pool and two hot tubs. The hot tub we used once was not hot, more like pool water and there were so many bright lights and others guests peering over it was literally being in a fish bowl. We did try out the hot tub farther away near the office and pool and that hot tub actually was hot and more enjoyable.

The check in process was easy. We arrived at 11:30 AM and our room was ready. We asked if there were any other rooms closer to the gulf and she advised us that yes there were but they could not trade us into any of those rooms because the owners were holding out for potential renters. Lori at the front desk advised us that they had 13 empty rooms this week. I calculated this to be about a 50% or less occupancy rate. Checkout was easy because we left prior to the front desk arriving on Saturday morning at 8:00 AM so we just had to leave the key in the after hours box.

The resort doesn't offer any activities, no spa, no fitness center, no mid-week cleaning, no 24 hour front desk service, no quarters for the washer and dryer. You actually have to take your dirty linens and towels to housekeeping on Wednesday to exchange for clean linens and towels. The information states that they offer housekeeping for a fee. The resort does offer FREE WiFi which was always fast and working.

The resort did not charge any flat fees for RCI exchanges like for the phone or WiFi or safe (there isn't a safe in the room) but the resort is located on St. Pete Beach and if you are spending any time off the island, there is a $0.50 toll to enter and to leave the island at this nearest location. Each trip was $1.00. If you are looking for a place to crash, spend the day on the beach or in the pool then this would work. If you are looking to spend anytime in the room or want to visit areas outside of the beach, this would not be my first choice. If I were to visit the area again, I would not stay at this resort again as it is nothing more than a glorified motel room.

Room Tip: Do not accept room 210 because it does not have a balcony. Ask for a 2nd floor unit with balcony ove...

Generally a nice quiet, family place. We spent a week in mid-December and the weather was great! Things were generally quiet, seems like it was low season time. We were able to get right into restraunts. The remodels were nicely done, new, modern furniture. The beds were new but very hard. It was clean, no bugs or grime. The 2 bedroom unit we had was very petite. It was rated for 6 people, which would have been a real challenge. The bistro table & 2 chairs could not have fit 4 let alone 6! The small living room barely had room for 4 to sit. The kitchen was tiny with room for only 1 person in it at a time. It's adequate if you are eating out most of the time, but for cooking in (like we did to save funds), not so much. Especially frustrating was the fact that there was no oven. I called ahead and asked if there was one and was told yes, it is a convection oven. They really should have been more honest and told me that it was a toaster oven that had a convection mode. We enjoyed the fact that it was on the beach and had unobstructed views of sunsets if you were sitting on the nice common patio area by the pool. (The parking lot view we had from our unit wasn't too pleasing, though.) The white, fine sand was beautiful, and the beach great! Pool, hot tub and grills are real pluses for the resort. We would have enjoyed a fitness room. Even with some of the negatives, overall we enjoyed our time there.

We stayed in this great beach-front hotel from June 25-July 2. Spacious, clean, quiet, fully equipped kitchens. Pool and gas grills. Centrally located to St .Pete Beach and Pass-a-Grille. We walked to the Don CeSar. Perfect place from which to drive to Busch Gardens and Adventure Island and get AWAY from them as well. Easy to get to from TPA. We rented a car but the SPB shuttle would have been sufficient if we had not had amusement parks on the agenda. Love this part of the peninsula and recommend the property for families with children as well as retirees. Great value. No onsite restaurant but there's a tiki-hut beach bar next door that serves food and cocktails. Beds were kind of extra-firm for me. No daily linen service so we did towels in the onsite laundry a couple of times but that was no hardship.
