Description: Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink is a showcase for the cuisine of Chef/Owner Michael Schwartz, with prices designed to encourage frequent dining. This unpretentious bistro seats 90 indoors and out, with another 14 seats at a handsome bar. Doubling as a casual neighborhood dining spot and a culinary destination, the bright, airy space in Miami’s evolving Design District showcases Schwartz’s trademark new American cuisine at prices designed to encourage frequent dining. Open daily for lunch and dinner, the menu is chock full of choices encouraging everything from a light bite to a multi-course feast. A quick glance at the menu and Michael's intentions for this restaurant are revealed. Notable is the frequency of the word homemade in the descriptions of dishes -- be it pasta, French fries or rabbit terrine. At the same time, Michael's takes advantage of the Chef’s decades-long relationships with winemakers to offer diners the opportunity to try a variety of wines at great value.

“Keeps Getting Better- Food and Drink at Reasonable Prices”
Reviewed 2 March 2012

I've been to Michael's Genuine in the Design District three or four times and each time I go, I am more impressed with the food. It is fresh food, locally sourced in a fun atmosphere with menus that change daily, so you'll never get bored. I went the first two times with my daughter for lunch, the latest time with my hubby after the Wynwood Art Show. Although we didn't have a reservation, we were seated right away (it was a Saturday night, but early 6:30), next to a couple visiting from out of town. The tables are very close together and it is not a quiet restaurant, but we got to see what the tables next to us ordered. The table from out of town ordered deviled eggs, marinated olives, french fries, butter lettuce salad with cashews, roast chicken ($31) and steak au poivre ($36), along with a bottle of wine and I don't even know what they got for dessert. They were obviously making the most of their trip to Michaels. We ordered a half carafe of wine and perused the menu. It is divided up into categories - snacks, sides, small, medium, large and extra large meals and desserts. We ordered (off the small) wrecked fish and shrimp ceviche with papaya, avocado, red pepper. It was a generous portion, chunky, with a nice tang to it and enjoyed the variety of textures. Next up (off the snack menu) was an amazing chicken livers on toast with carmelized onions. It tasted more like a whipped mousse and my husband, who doesn't like chicken livers, loved it. For 5 bucks, it can't be beat- melt in your mouth heaven with the nice crunch of the toast and sweet tang of the onions on top. I have the duck confit for dinner ($16)(medium), my husband had a fish dish, both very good. For dessert we split the tangerine creamsicle Pot de Creme with warm doughnuts and blackberry tarragon jam ($10)- amazing and worth every calorie. My daughter and I had tried the Chocolate Cremosa with sea salt, olive oil, sour dough crostini and expresso parfait - also fantastic, with the mix of sweet and salty and chocolate. The renowned pastry chef at Michaels does not dissapoint, and our meal, including the wine, clocked in at under a hunded bucks, which is actually quite reasonable for Miami. I feel lucky to live in a town with a restaurant of this caliber, where you can always count on consistenly good food. Our waiter, however, seemed a little rushed and annoyed with us, but was considerably nicer to the out-of- town Daddy Warbucks seated next to us. Oh well...

It was some good food, the place is always crowded (good sign!)
Try the pig belly and the burger. It's a bit on the high side, but this is Miami

A little bit of a cab ride from our hotel in South Beach. So worth it! Some of the best tasting, most inventive food I have ever eaten. Our server, Scott, was awesome. Attentive, knowledgeable, friendly. The short ribs were out of this world. I wish this was closer to my home!

“Just Wow!”
Reviewed 21 February 2012

The terms unique, creative, genius and wonderful don't begin to capture the dining experience we enjoyed at Michael's Genuine in Miami last weekend. This is a very special restaurant that was quite reminiscent of Keller's best in the Napa / Sonoma area. You must try this jewel if you're in reasonable driving distance and when you do, have the pig's ear and prepare to be amazed.... And by the way, it's extremely reasonably priced, too!
