Herbie's Bar & Chowder House
Ranked #17 of 94 Restaurants in Marathon
Certificate of Excellence
Price range: USD 7 - USD 40
Cuisines: Seafood
Description: Herbies is the oldest operating restaurant in the Heart of the Florida Keys! Having been established in the late 1940's under the name Maggie's Chowder House, it has become a landmark restaurant and continued local favorite. While the restaurant is well established, the only thing old school about the menu is the fact that everything is prepared from scratch here, and that includes grinding our own grass fed beef, conch, sausage, and hot dogs (when available). And, our beer selection is unmatched from Miami to Key West. All on tap craft beer. No, you will not find a National branded beer here, but you will find true American fresh craft beer along with some exceptionally fine wines all poured by the glass. So, don't let the Florida road side shack appearance fool you! Come on in and enjoy some of the best food in the Heart of the Keys!

Herbies was a delight! They offer traditional "Keys" type food, but their forte is offering unique delicacies. They even had elk! They have seating in the room with the bar, or in the seperate dining room. Decorated for the Keys, Herbies is a delighful place.

We stumbled on this place while driving through Marathon on a Sunday morning. First thing you notice the clean smell. The second thing was how wonderful the owners hustled greeting and serving. This place has all kinds of beer but my favorite thing was the conch chowder. Great place for a Keys stop.

Herbies was a huge disappointment, sad to say. We had high hopes of scrumptious chowders and delicious food for lunch. It is a tiny place, 3 tables inside, 3 picnic tables in a sort of outside eating area with ceiling fans and a separate bar room. The bar is apparently the main event here with 36 craft beers. Cleanliness was lacking, sliced onions were left on the table from the patrons before us, floor was dirty I ordered the BBQ pork sandwich, which came with a pickle, does not come with fries or any other side. I requested that the onion and tomato be left off my BBQ sandwich, but, that was ignored and it arrived with it on there. Hubby had the fish and chips plate, and the appetizer of the raw oysters on the half shell. There is no water view, atmosphere was nonexistent, waitress did not know how to smile or make you feel welcome at all. Overall, very disappointing.

Hi Laurie,

My sincerest apologies for the lack of cleanliness at your table. It truly is unacceptable given we pride ourselves on our sanitation efforts. We have three dining areas in this traditional old school Florida Keys shack. The main dining room (you mistook as the bar area,) the front room, and the screened in porch area. Yes, it is an odd layout with doors to each section and no ability to walk inside between them. Just to put things in perspective, that area is exposed to the outdoor elements more so than the two other indoor rooms. That said, however, there was no excuse for the table to be dirty.

I also apologize for the onion and tomato on your bbq pork sandwich. There simply is no excuse for not managing special requests like that, and I will work with our kitchen staff in an effort to prevent that from happening in the future. Unfortunately, we are not perfect, but we do our best to be accommodating. Also, we do not include sides with our sandwiches. We make everything in house including smoking our own meats, making our own sauces, cutting our own french fries, grinding our own grass fed beef, making all of our chowders from scratch the old fashion way, unlike most other places. It is what makes us different from the rest. That does come at a cost which is ultimately passed on to you, the consumer. I could increase my prices and include them, but that would not make most of our customers happy especially when they may not want the sides to begin with. So, we decided it would be best if of you only pay for what you want. In a time where most other restaurants rely on "freezer-to-fryer" food, giving those side items away is a must and also cost substantially less than the quality of the products we sell here. So, that is the decision we made in order to maintain a manageable cost as well as a fair price for our customers.

I also apologize for not having the water view you had hoped for. While positions directly on US-1, I assumed that would have been intuitively obvious when pulling into our parking lot. However, to assume only make an... well, I am certain you know the rest of that ol' saying.

Most importantly, I apologize for our service. There simply is no excuse for them not to smile regardless of what issue, staff or patron they encounter. This is something we will also address as we strive to maintain a sincere family and friendly atmosphere here at Herbies.

BTW, you said you came to have " scrumptious chowders and delicious food for lunch." But, you made no mention of ordering any chowder, nor any mention of the food quality you did order. I assume given the lack of comment, that we managed that part well.

Again, my apologies for you unsatisfactory experience here at Herbies.

Great food! We ordered off the menu also. The freshest oysters in The Keys! Great fish dip, conch fritters, etc. and bartender was extremely helpful with the extensive beer menu. Love the atmosphere. Very laid back and original buildings. Definitely return on our next visit!
