We staying in cabin 5 and loved it. The grounds are small but very well maintained. The maintenance man is constantly at work and is very friendly. The tiki and hammock area is a really nice touch. However, the tiki area is more of a place to come outside and eat meals and is not much of a bar (its not usually staffed). The noise from the street was not an issue at all. You do get afew airplanes overhead but it is not constant. It sits back just eough from the main street that you can have alittle privacy but it still close to everything. Everybody was very nice and welcoming to us. Also, remember you are in the middle of the Keys so you will see small lizards and may see some ants in your cottage. It is not an infestation like some of the other reviewers seem to think but you may see a couple bugs or a lizard....your in the Keys and your in a cottage not a hotel, its going to happen. The cabin was just what we needed. Its small and dated but they bill themselves as a "Vintage Cottage Resort" which is what they are. If you want a modern, super high class resort you should look some where else. If you want a relaxing stay, without spending huge amounts of money then this is the place for you. We would stay here again!

We stayed in cottage number 8 for 2 nights- everything was really clean inside. The lady at the reception desk was really helpful and showed us where the cottage was. Loved how the cottage was divided into different sections, the living / bedroom area at the front, a small kitchen at the back and storage area and bathroom by the back door. We had an outside shower which was really fun. We also had a shared interior patio. We didn't use the tiki bar so can't comment on it.

Very easy to find and handy restuarants, gas stations nearby- try Herbies, a great seafood diner.

Room Tip: Number 8 is really good, has a wonderful outdoor shower

We took our kids to the Keys for Spring Break because we have never been there before. We chose Marathon for it's proximity north and south, and chose Tropical Cottages because of the rave reviews on TripAdvisor. I can not for the life of me figure out why this place got such great reviews, because it's horrible. Let's start with the false advertising: website advertises continental breakfast - there is none. When we checked in, the young girl said "breakfast is served at 7:30 and we set up coffee in the tiki bar". I asked where breakfast would be, and was told, "oh, my mistake, there is none. Just coffee. But there are plenty of places up and down the street." Okay - since we had a kitchenette, and didnt find any vending machines, we went to a local supermarket and bought cereal and do forth to get us through two days. Also reviews indicate a nice tiki bar - but that's it. No bartender, just an empty bar!! We could see some ice makers and a wine fridge but no employees - not even on Friday and Saturday nights!! These are all reasons why we chose this place and were very disappointed.

Okay, on to the room -we were in unit #2 and the only positive thing I can say is that the wall a/c unit was cold and provided enough noise to drown out the constant airplane noise. The beds were terribly hard, like sleeping on the ground. The bathroom - ugh!! NO water pressure, not even enough to brush your teeth. Shower was the worst I've ever had. And BUGS!! We killed one wasp; couldn't put anything on the counter or table because of numerous tiny crazy ants; very large ants appeared in the bathroom at night; and we chased a very large gecko out the door. It was so awful that I was ready to forfeit the $200 that I spent on the second night and drive home instead, but we did end up staying anyway.

Do not stay here. We were looking for the tropical Keys experience and were so let down. I would stay at the Holiday Inn for the same price next time!!!!!!

The young lady at the reception desk was polite and helpful. We were a little surprised at how very small the accomodations were, but we stayed since the cottage was clean and quiet. The next morning we drove to Key West, spent the day there, and drove back to the cottage for another night. There were several very good restaurants in Marathon. Overall, we enjoyed our day in Key West more than the time spent in Marathon. However, if you want to stay in Marathon and are looking for small, quiet, clean, and laid-back, the tropical cottages will please. The tiki hut bar on the grounds is a nice addition. Everyone here was very friendly.

Casual and cosy cottages. I stayed in #11 with the open air bathroom - it was perfect for me, who couldn't love showering in the moonlight? Mike the evening manager was great and the tiki bar master. My room was comfortable and clean. They could stand to add a few more kitchen utensils (no cork screw or bottle opener) but there was enough to get by. If you are looking for a plush resort experience, the Tropical Cottages are not for you. If you are more interested in exploring the Keys by day and want a low key place to chill at night...check in at the Tropical Cottages.
